Thank you to Joyce Foster for sharing these honest feelings and wise words about mental health! We're glad JFS could play an important role in her life and proud that she has been an employee, board chair, supporter, honoree, and friend. Her post: "Whenever I hear of someone taking their life I'm reminded of the dreadful day I received the call that my dad had committed suicide. It's been over 49 years and yet the excruciating pain of that day is still with me. The survivors feel so helpless. Perhaps that's why I felt working at Jewish Family Service was so rewarding for me even though I'm not a therapist. Being in that environment and being able to refer my clients( who were looking for employment) for clinical counseling was important. My dad was one of the creative geniuses... And then faced with depression. Friends we need to obliterate the stigma of mental illness and invest in the remedying of this illness. Did you know you couldn't qualify for an individual health care policy if you had this pre existing condition? Until now! This isn't a political statement.. It's personal!"
