Alksne, MD, became a doctor of medicine in 1958 upon graduating from the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle, Washington. He spent his surgical internship year at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and then served his residency training in neurosurgery at the University of Washington, which he completed in 1963. At the time, Dr. Alksne displayed an interest in electron microscopic neuroanatomy, which led him to apply for a one-year National Institutes of Health fellowship at the Anatomical Institute in Oslo, Norway. He trained under the tutelage of Professors Blackstad and Brodal (1963-1964).
