The Kentucky Center for African American Heritage will enhance the public's knowledge about the history, heritage and cultural contributions of African Americans in Kentucky. Besides its commitment to preserving the traditions and accomplishments of the past, the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage will be a vital, contemporary institution, providing space for performances of all types. The visitor will choose from a variety of activities, including poetry readings, concerts and plays. Busloads of schoolchildren will participate in interactive exhibits designed to expand the mind and feed the soul. Groups and associations will be encouraged to rent rooms for meetings and dinners and forums. Visitors of all ages, incomes and ethnic backgrounds will be invited to explore and celebrate the opulent tapestry of African American life and culture. The center will serve as a destination for residents and tourists alike, further stimulating the revitalization of the Russell neighborhood and enhancing the pride of local African Americans.
