Kentucky Free Press was started in response to Kentucky's sorely lacking print media outlets. The news media is supposed to be our "fourth estate" of government: making sure there is transparency when TPTB (The Powers That Be) want to scurry behind closed doors. There they make laws that are not only unconstitutional--often by both Kentucky and U.S. constitutions--but benefit no one but themselves. We are sick of it. The view from here is that Kentucky's government has fallen into the hands of the Bigs: Big Ag, Big Oil, Big Pharma, Big Dairy, Big Campaign Contributors. Big corporate interests. Not to mention Big Legislator Pensions. There are more and more laws every year, criminalizing everything we do with stiffer and stiffer penalties for which we pay higher and higher taxes... And what are we getting for it? More lies and more debt. Enough! What Is The Fourth Estate? The phrase is attributed to Edmund Burke (1729 - 1797), a British politician: "Burke said that there were three Estates in Parliament, but in the Reporters Gallery yonder, there sat a fourth Estate more important far than they all." The fourth estate is a term that positions the press as a fourth branch of government, one that is critical to a functioning democracy because it is the people's watchdog.
