Kids of Dakar aims to tackle the complex issue of forced child begging in Dakar Senegal, practiced in the context of Koranic schools (Daaras) where the Senegalese state has never really played a systematic regulatory role nor provided any regular financial support. We are advocating in favor of Daara modernization and reform in effort to stop the coercion of the children attending these Daaras under the obligation to provide for their own maintenance through forced begging. Experiencing the gravity of the situation firsthand, (as Antoinette, one of the founding members has spent a good chunk of her childhood in Senegal) seeing the systematic neglect and exploitation of the boys has compelled us to create this non-profit in effort to address the concern.As a non-profit organization, Kids of Dakar hopes to reach out to local and international audiences to engage and persuade them in ensuring that Talibés and any other child in the system of forced begging is not subject to exploitation and neglect. Kids of Dakar as a responsible program, will relentlessly invests it’s energy in finding ways to animate a dialogue in local and international communities that would ignite action, and incentives to address the issue and protect its principle victims who are the children.
