The KW Weavers' and Spinners' Guild is a non-profit organization. The guild's goals are the preservation and improvement of craftsmanship in hand weaving, spinning, and dyeing. We meet the first Wednesday of every month at 7pm. Guests are welcome! The Guild was established in 1948 by a small group of friends who enjoyed the textile arts. Originally named the Kitchener-Waterloo Hand-weavers, the group's mandate was to continue the textile tradition in the Waterloo Region, and assist others in obtaining knowledge and understanding of their craft. The twelve friends met in one another's homes and shared looms. Renamed the Kitchener-Waterloo Weavers' & Spinners' Guild in 1980, it was incorporated as non-profit in April 1994. The Guild has grown in numbers, but it has not lost sight of the original goal - to encourage the textile tradition and share knowledge with others. We continue to offer a wide range of learning opportunities to members of the community. We invite and encourage anyone with an interest in textile arts to investigate our Guild.

General Info

Classes: The Guild holds classes throughout the year in response to student demand as well as the availability of equipment and instructors. Looms or spinning wheels are provided for all classes. Enrollment is limited to five or six students per class, and advance registration is required. Please contact us for more information on courses, including costs, dates and times. Weaving I A first course for beginning weavers with little or no prior weaving experience. You will learn how to plan a project and estimate the materials needed; how to make a warp and dress a loom; and how to read and weave simple patterns. You will complete one project (usually a scarf or a runner) as well as samples of various patterns. The course takes 7 evenings over 7 weeks. Weaving II A more advanced project-based course for those who have completed Weaving I or have some limited weaving experience. You will complete four or five projects using different materials, pattern techniques and looms of various sizes. Examples of projects: colour gamp tea towel, placemat, overshot table runner, lap throw or small blanket. The course takes 7 evenings over 7 weeks. Spinning I An introduction to the art of spinning. This course looks at the rudimentaries of spinning and develops an understanding of different drafting techniques with wool as a material. The course is suitable for anyone who would like to try spinning - no previous knowledge of fibres or spinning is required. The course takes 6 evenings over 6 weeks. Spinning II An intermediate course that delves into the technical aspects of spinning. It examines more drafting techniques, other fibers (other wool breeds, vegetable fibres, other animals, and silk) and how to handle them, as well as the analysis and control of twist. This course is appropriate for anyone who can spin or has a previous background or knowledge of spinning. The course takes 6 evenings over 6 weeks. Scarf Workshops Weave and take home a beautiful scarf, and at the same time, learn a little about weaving! Scarf workshops take about three hours and are usually held on Saturday mornings. The workshop cost includes materials, and there are many different yarns to choose from. Contact us to find out when the next scarf workshop will be held.
