Campers receive uniforms, free lunch, attend weekly field trips and enjoy a summer of sports, swimming and rowing. School supplies have been distributed to nearly 60,000 students In low income elementary schools reaching an average of 6,000 students at the beginning of the school year. The students receive book bags full of notebooks, paper, folders, crayons, glue, scissors and other essentials to last a full year. The Scholarship program has graduated 200 scholars over the years and currently has 55 students in full four-year scholarships in State of Florida universities or colleges. During the holiday season, the distribution of toys and bicycles have touched the lives of more than 75,000 children and the “adoption” of families has fulfilled the needs and wishes of hundreds of disadvantaged families. The Club has built playgrounds at city parks, the first one at Douglas, followed by A.D. Barnes, Curtiss Park and Jose Marti. It has initiated after-school tutoring along with family literacy programs. It has organized holiday meals for the elderly, donated to other charitable organizations, it has helped feed the homeless, cure ill children and assist the most vulnerable members of our community. Carnaval Miami & Calle Ocho Organized by the Kiwanis Club of Little Havana since 1978, CALLE OCHO is far more than the hottest street party in the nation! It is the largest Hispanic celebration of Latin music, where 1 million people gather one Sunday in March to dance, eat & celebrate our Hispanic traditions. Calle Ocho is the culmination of Carnaval Miami, two weeks of events in March, that begin with an 8 kilometer footrace, a full weekend of jazz concerts & art pavilions at Carnaval on the Mile, a Cooking Contest, Golf & Domino tournaments and for the children a Soccer Challenge.
