We had an excellent low-rank testing last night! Tonight's high-rank testing will be a fairly small one, but with some excellent martial artists! Among our Black Belts testing tonight for rank: Ms. Nancy Moreira Coto will test for 1st Black Decided; Ms. Janet Malzahn McKinnerney will test for 2nd Black Recommended; and Ms. Ana Lucia Rescala will test for 2nd Black Decided. These three represent countless hours, months and years of dedicated, hard work -- and many bruises received and GIVEN! Chief Master and I are very proud of all of you!
Thanksgiving was officially designated as a national holiday by Abraham Lincoln in 1863, in the midst of our civil war. His speech explaining the need for this holiday is even more true today than when it was written. For those interested, here is his proclamation: Washington, D.C. October 3, 1863 By the President of the United States of America. A Proclamation. The year that is drawing towards its close, has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added, which are of so extraordinary a nature, that they cannot fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever watchful providence of Almighty God. In the midst of a civil war of unequaled magnitude and severity, which has sometimes seemed to foreign States to invite and to provoke their aggression, peace has been preserved with all nations, order has been maintained, the laws have been respected and obeyed, and harmony has prevailed everywhere except in the theatre of military conflict; while that theatre has been greatly contracted by the advancing armies and navies of the Union. Needful diversions of wealth and of strength from the fields of peaceful industry to the national defence, have not arrested the plough, the shuttle or the ship; the axe has enlarged the borders of our settlements, and the mines, as well of iron and coal as of the precious metals, have yielded even more abundantly than heretofore. Population has steadily increased, notwithstanding the waste that has been made in the camp, the siege and the battle-field; and the country, rejoicing in the consiousness of augmented strength and vigor, is permitted to expect continuance of years with large increase of freedom. No human counsel hath devised nor hath any mortal hand worked out these great things. They are the gracious gifts of the Most High God, who, while dealing with us in anger for our sins, hath nevertheless remembered mercy. It has seemed to me fit and proper that they should be solemnly, reverently and gratefully acknowledged as with one heart and one voice by the whole American People. I do therefore invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens. And I recommend to them that while offering up the ascriptions justly due to Him for such singular deliverances and blessings, they do also, with humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience, commend to His tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife in which we are unavoidably engaged, and fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquillity and Union. In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the United States to be affixed. Done at the City of Washington, this Third day of October, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-three, and of the Independence of the Unites States the Eighty-eighth. By the President: Abraham Lincoln
Tonight at 6:00 we'll be teaching our Warrior Combinations Clinic for all of our Adults and Karate Kids. That will be followed at 6:45 by Krav Maga (week 6 curriculum) for our Adults. Tomorrow night is Friday Fight Night, the most fun you can have (legally or otherwise) on a Friday evening! Kids' Sparring at 4:30, Adult Forms at 5:15, and Adult Sparring at 6:00. Be sure to bring your combat weapons, as smacking someone with a stick is great for your end-of-the-week stress release!!
Point sparring, combat weapons and combat board breaks made the start of summer fight night a great time for our Karate Kids. We also had 17 Adults in Friday night sparring, which provided a great mix of speed, skills and intensity. Let's shoot to break 20 in this class by the end of June. Although we practice sparring about 4 days a week, the best fighters in the school are the ones who regularly attend the Friday Night Fights! Excellent work tonight!!
Happy Mother's Day to all of our Moms who work so hard to provide the best for their children. Love is an action! Every time Moms do a load of laundry, make a meal, drive their kids to school, and especially when they say "No!" realizing it may result in a moody, angry child underfoot, they are really saying "I love you." In St. Augustine's sermon on love, he said, 'Why did the Holy Spirit, who pours love into us, take the form of a dove? The dove has no bitterness, yet she fights with beak and wings for her young; hers is a fierceness without bitterness.' Such a beautiful sentiment, likening the love of God with the love a mother protecting her young. Chief Master and I have both been blessed with the most amazing Moms, and certainly any success we have achieved is a direct result of the Christian morals and work ethic with which they raised us. Happy Mothers' Day! May your day be filled with unexpected blessings and the joy of time spent with your loved ones!
In addition to our regular class schedule, we have two special events tonight: Combat Weapons Clinic at 6:00! Warrior Krav Maga at 6:45! For more details, check your calendars, look on our student and Krav pages, and/or check your emails. Of course, you can always give us a call at the school (813-891-0624). Hope to see you tonight! PS. If you are an existing student and do not have access to our private FB page, or if you aren't receiving the newsletters and calendars through email, please stop by the office and see Sr. Master Kowkabany. Thank you!
As school owners we are continually reminded not to post about religion or politics. That certainly makes sense, but I've never claimed to be the smartest business owner. When every blessing we have -- a very blessed and happy marriage, amazing role models as our parents, incredible brothers, a loving and supportive family, loving and supportive students, a positive and uplifting group of peers in a profession that we truly cherish, our good health, the opportunities and freedoms available to us simply because of where we were born, and eternal life because God our Father was willing to sacrifice His Son to save us -- how can we not give heartfelt thanks and certainly all of the glory to God. We are called to love God and to love our neighbor. Love is an action. Making a 5-minute post to give thanks to our Lord is a very small action, but St. Teresa tells us that even small actions, when done with love, are important. We wish you a very blessed Easter, the discovery of how much God truly loves you reflected in the eyes of your family, the joy of the Resurrection, and the blessings of eternal life. Happy Easter from the Kowkabanys!
Tuesday brings an intense noon class for our adults, an exciting Krav class at 6:45, and of course our regular full schedule of classes. In tonight's BBC Family Class, we'll also be working on Board Breaks! Hope to see you there!
We had excellent Rank Testings this week, with the results to be given out next Tuesday evening at 6:00. Our March-April calendar is being finalized, and will be emailed to all students on Friday afternoon. Our KFMA Toastmasters group is growing, please see one of the Masters is you are interested in joining us! It's free, and open to all of our actively training students! Our new Krav Maga program is off to a great start, and permanent class times will be released in the next few weeks. For our adults who are interested in joining this class, please see Sr. Master Kowkabany.
Exciting News for students at KFMA! As noted in our newsletter mailed out yesterday, we are beginning our Warrior Krav Maga program in February! This dynamic, Self-Defense program will initially be rolled out to a select group of our Adult Students on Feburary 19th! A special "Thank you" to our Instructor and head of the ATA Masters' Council, Chief Master Bill Clark, for developing an incredible training curriculum! This program is an excellent compliment to our existing Martial Arts curriculum, and will also serve as a strong stand-alone training program. Chief Master Laura Kowkabany and Sr. Master David Kowkabany will be teaching this program personally.
