HISTORY Left Coast Theatre Co. was formed in the Spring of 2012 from the successful gay men’s writing group, GuyWriters Playwrights. After several successful productions of the Eat Our Shorts series of short plays, the main writers/producers decided to create our own company to focus on producing queer-themed plays written by local and national GLBT playwrights. To further our institutional objectives, we host a monthly writing workshop for playwrights to hone their work in a judgement-free, constructive space, that fosters the creative mission of Left Coast Theatre Co. During our tenure with GuyWriters Playwright group, we successfully produced four shows that featured Bay Area playwrights, under the series titled Eat Our Shorts. The second in the series, EOS2: The Secret Lives of San Franciscans, was featured in the 2010 San Francisco Fringe Festival, earning us the Top Box Office Award and Most Sold Out Shows award. The third production of the Eat Our Short series, EOS3: Large Unit Available, sold out its entire run prior to opening night, which necessitated the addition of another show that also sold out. The fourth, EOS4: Love and Other Disasters, was so successful, we added an additional week of performances to meet the demand of ticket sales. Art critic George Heymont of The Huffington Post said of this show that he "was completely blindsided to find [him]self witnessing one of the funniest evenings of gay theater [he's] seen in years." Ultimately, the Eat Our Shorts series challenged our creativity with work that dealt with the ever-changing, and often hilarious, issues that are (un)common in queer relationships. After the great success of the Eat Our Shorts series and with growing interest in the company by Bay Area actors and writers, Left Coast Theatre Co. emerged as a full-fledged theatre company. In September of 2012, we debuted with Family Programming at the Shelton Theatre in the bustling Union Square district of San Francisco. Family Programming featured seven short plays from Bay Area playwrights as well as our first national submissions. These quirky, absurd, and over-the-top comedic shorts took audiences on a journey to discover the characters and characteristics of queer family life — both the chosen family and the family we were given. The four-week run was a success with both audiences and critics alike. No longer concentrating on the works of just gay men, Left Coast Theatre Co. aims to foster the work of all LGBT writers in the Bay Area and nationally. We have expanded our season from one show per year to two, and made a big move downtown to the Shelton Theatre. We are excited to continue bringing quality theater to the community, and we look forward to incorporating full-length works in our repertoire for future seasons.
