Description

Leicester Cathedral is a Grade II* listed building on the site of a Roman temple. The present St Martins church dates from the Norman period and has evolved continuously since then, notably in the Victorian period, but more work was done in 1927 when it became a cathedral. Since March 2015 the cathedral has housed the tomb of King Richard III. Open 365 days of the year for daily services. For visitors to Richard III's tomb please see times below. Eucharist Monday at 0830, Morning Prayer Tue-Fri at 0830, Eucharist each weekday (except Mon and Sat) at 1300 and Evening Prayer/Evensong each day at 17.30. Sunday: Morning Prayer 0740, Eucharist (BCP) at 0800, Cathedral Eucharist at 1030, Evensong/ Evening Prayer 1600 Normal entry times to visit as a tourist or to see the tomb of King Richard III are 10.00am – 5.00pm Monday – Saturday. Sundays are set aside solely as a day for prayer and worship and so it is not normally possible to visit the tomb on this holy day. Leicester Cathedral is generally open from 8.00am – 6.00pm Monday to Saturday, and from 8.00am – 4.00pm on Sundays. There are events, festivals and services (e.g. funerals and recitals) which interrupt this pattern week by week. If in doubt, please telephone and check during normal office hours. During our daily services of Morning Prayer (8.30am), Eucharist (1.00pm) and Evensong/Evening Prayer (5.30pm), everyone is welcome to join us, but it is not possible to visit as a tourist or to see the tomb at these times. The Cathedral Facebook site reflects all the work we do as the focus for the Bishop's ministry and the on-going life of the Cathedral, and also the work to reinter King Richard III. On all these topics, we welcome comment and ask for courtesy in the views expressed.
