Description
Leigh Square has exhibition, studio and program spaces for performing, visual and literary arts and festivals (e.g. May Day, Farmers Market, Summer in the City, Christmas in Leigh Square), as well as archival/historic display area and commercial space. It is operated by the Parks & Recreation Department in the City of Port Coquitlam in cooperation with partners such as the Friends of Leigh Square Society and Port Coquitlam Heritage & Cultural Society under an agreement. It’s an approach that employs the principles of community development: facilitating rather than providing, supporting rather than directing, and creating an enabling environment that permits community members and artists to work in partnerships to achieve community cultural goals. The Leigh Square Community Arts Village encourages and facilitates community development through arts, culture, and heritage within Port Coquitlam and serves as a cultural meeting place, a 21st century community arts village.

Leigh Square is made up of three buildings: The Bandshell is a large, glass covered outdoor performance stage great for any type of performance from music to dance and theatre. The Gathering Place consists of a performance/exhibition space called the Living Room, Kitchen, Meeting rooms, and Green Rooms for performers. Upstairs are the Parks and Recreation offices, and a loft area. Much of the wall space in the Gathering Place is constructed to allow for art exhibitions. The Living Room is envisioned as a space for people to come and meet, enjoy stimulating conversations and create meaningful encounters. The Outlet consists of a large, bright art workroom, area for an artist-in-residence to work with the community, a retail outlet, a Ticketmaster outlet, the Community Archives operated by the PoCo Heritage and Cultural Society (in partnership with the City), the art pod bay, and programmers office. The loading dock has been expanded to create an outdoor stage.Company Rating
