Lincoln’s Inn Library is open to barrister members of the Inns of Court and student members of Lincoln’s Inn. Researchers may use the rare books and manuscripts by appointment. The Library is not open to the public.

Description

Occupying the north wing of the Great Hall complex, designed by Philip Hardwick and opened in 1845, the Library is the only one of the four Inn library buildings not to have been destroyed in the Second World War. As a collection of books it is the oldest library still to exist in London. The Library is a modern working legal reference library. As well as providing a full range of legal databases, it holds extensive traditional printed collections. The Library holds about 150,000 volumes, the core of which is a comprehensive range of English legal materials for the practitioner and bar student. Particular areas of specialisation are Chancery practice, Commonwealth legislation and law reports, materials on the Channel Islands and Isle of Man, and Parliamentary materials. Photocopying, internet, printing and word-processing facilities are available in the Library. The Library also operates a distance service for barristers. Normal opening hours are Monday to Friday 9.00 am to 8.00 pm. In addition, the Library opens one Saturday in four. From August to mid-September the hours are 9.30 am to 6.00 pm. The Library is closed on bank holidays and for a fortnight at Christmas.
