Ever wanted to know how we came up with that catchy name of ours? Here is why: What does Lingspire mean? As a company which specialises in training people to speak another language, perhaps it seems somewhat strange that we are also in the business of inventing new words, like our name for example! I hope you will allow us this one exception to our normally high standards of training you to speak impeccably! But if you allow me to explain, I think you will forgive us. Coming up with a company name is pretty difficult. In today’s world with thousands of domain names already registered, you have to think somewhat differently. In the last few years we’ve seen more and more companies having to invent words or misspell them to find something which fits. Look at Facebook or Tumblr for example. I don’t remember any Facebooks or Tumblrs lying around when I was a kid, do you? With our name, we didn’t want to just misspell a word or find a free domain name, we wanted to tell a story. So what is the story behind Lingspire? Firstly, we are all about languages, we just love them. An old word for languages in English is the word ‘tongue’. Expressions like “our mother tongue” are still used today. But did you know that tongue in Latin is ‘lingua’, which is also the word for language? Well this is where the ‘ling’ in Lingspire comes from. In our name you will also find the word ‘inspire’! It’s clear, right? Motivating and inspiring people to make progress are central to what we do. When you learn a new language, there is nothing more inspiring than having your first conversation in the new language. Our innovative programmes are all about getting you to speak confidently. We don’t do coursebooks and endless grammar exercises; we intensively focus on the goal of language learning: communication. With tasks which make the language fun and practical, you’ll be surprised how far you can go. But we’re also not going to lie, learning another language can be pretty tough. That’s why we specialise in intensive programmes. Our aim is to get you to the top of the mountain much faster! Did I say mountain? You may have noticed that our courses are named after some of the greatest mountains. We like mountains at Lingspire because they have always represented a challenge, but also something which can be conquered. Lingspire helps you overcome the challenges ahead, and you don’t need to be fit to succeed! That’s why we built the word ‘spire’ is at the end of our name. A spire is the peak of a mountain (the pointy bit) or a structure on the top of high buildings like the spike at the top of the empire state building. For German speakers out there: ‘Spire’ is pronounced like ‘Eier’ making ‘Lingspeier’ So that’s how we came up with the name ‘Lingspire’. It’s all about challenging and inspiring you to achieve your goal of speaking another language.
