Description

Hello! My name is Alex and I am your Little Signers Club leader in Gloucestershire; currently teaching babies, toddlers and their grown ups to sign, in classes in Gloucester and Cheltenham. I am a former school librarian, wife and mother to two young girls, living in Gloucester. I have an enhanced DBS check, Public Liability Insurance, and am currently studying to gain my British Sign Language Level 2 certificate. I first learnt about baby signing when my eldest daughter was about 4 months old, whilst browsing the internet through yet another endless feed and it was a lightbulb moment. Here I was, a first time mother, fairly isolated with far away friends, family the other side of the world and without my own dear mother who passed away when I was younger. What on earth was I supposed to do with this baby? How was I supposed to know what she wanted? Why did she cry ALL the time? And then…BABY SIGNING. Learning to sign together completely turned things around for us. I grew more confident in my parenting, feeling sure that I was responding to her needs, knowing what she wanted. She cried less, we were both happier, calmer, more attached. It suited the kind of parent I wanted to be, and she was able to communicate more easily with me about what she wanted, or saw, or felt. I knew then that this is what I wanted to do for others. It took another 5 years, when my youngest came along, before I was able to realise that dream, but I am absolutely loving it! Giving people the means to understand and communicate with their babies/toddlers before they can speak, so they can be responsive, respectful, strengthen their bond, help them manage stress, reduce tears, frustration and guesswork, is how I feel I can really make a difference to this and future generations. ‘It is not our job to toughen our children up to face a cruel and heartless world. We sing songs, learn signs, read stories and there is social time for parents to chat, off load and have that all important HOT drink afterwards.
