Description

Here at Local Lather, we use simple straightforward ingredients. These include natural dyes & colorants, as well as natural exfoliates and additives (ground coffee, cloves, orange peel, rosebuds, cranberry seeds, blueberry seeds, poppy seeds, calendula petals, chamomile flowers, silk, and the list goes on). We only use natural ESSENTIAL OILS distilled directly from the plant source.

General Info

For the most part, we use the cold-process method of soap making, which involves the use of lye (sodium hydroxide). Soap is made from a base of oils and lye, which undergo a chemical reaction called saponification. Cold-process means we do not force saponification through heat. We blend the oils and lye mixture until emulsified, then pour into a mold to set. Once set (about 12 – 24 hours), we un-mold, cut, and store for curing. Curing takes anywhere from 4 to 6 weeks and allows the lye to completely saponify with the oil. Once the oils are saponified by the lye, no lye remains. We superfat our soap with a variety of luxury butters & oils (raw shea butter, macadamia nut oil, sweet almond oil, & the list goes on) so there is a percent of these oils that remain unsaponified in the finished soap. This makes the soap much more moisturizing and luxurious! Occasionally we also use the hot process soap method which essentially means heat is applied to speed up the saponification process.
