This project will examine the impact of the selected legacies of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and their transferability to the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Games with particular reference to promote legacies to the current problems in the city's favelas. This involves analysing the nexus between the impact of sport and other mega-events and issues of human security to produce new data concerning the use of sport and other mega-events as tools for the promotion of peace and development and will contribute to academic debate, policy and programming. This research raises introspective issues regarding the effectiveness of using sport and other mega-events to transform the lives of people living in socially deprived areas and whether any positive impacts seen as a result of such events in one area are replicable using the same or similar programmes in another city in another part of the world where the culture and the issues may be very different. The use of sporting and other mega-events to bring about transformation of socially deprived areas of major cities is becoming an increasingly important part of the raison d'être for hosting such events, especially given the immense costs involved and the current economic climate.
