I am originally from Spain. Born and bred in a country where women's wishes are not respected, sometimes not even considered, during pregnancy and childbirth, I soon fell in love with New Zealand's wonderful maternity system, where women can choose their midwife, have continuity of care and enjoy freedom of choice to have the pregnancy and birth they really want. I am a happy, positive, enthusiastic person who loves to laugh, especially at myself. Pregnancy and childbirth are full of wonderful, magical, overwhelming, inspiring moments and I would feel honoured to be part of them with you. Life is not perfect, and often there will also be low, sad, scary moments. These moments are much more tolerable with a supportive, understanding, non-judgemental person by your side. I want to be the person who laughs and cries with you during this adventure you are going through. Choose me, and you will not only get a midwife, but a trusted confidant and a professional friend. I love including partners, children, and other family and friends in your pregnancy care if you so wish. People you choose have different roles to fulfil in the arrival of your baby, and love to be shown they are valued. I will make sure they do not feel left out, and that their questions are also answered and their worries reassured. Older brothers and sisters particularly love helping taking blood pressures, listening to baby's heart, and once the baby is here, helping with newborn examinations, weighing and nappy changes. This helps them bond with the baby, prevent jealousy and become involved. Believe me, this will be very useful! It also makes appointments much more fun :) My philosophy in midwifery involves working with women to provide them with the pregnancy and birth experience they want. For me, the best birth experience is the one where you and your family feel your wishes have been listened to and respected, regardless of place or circumstances. If you choose me as your midwife, I will listen to you, explain the options clearly, answer all your questions and respect your choices. I do not judge and I do not coerce women into making decisions. I recognise my clients as equals, adult, intelligent women who can make choices for themselves and their families. I will be there supporting you and advocating for you at all times. I provide all services and am confident working in all sort of environments: home births, primary unit births, hospital births and water births. Midwives in New Zealand are autonomous and provide one-to-one services to pregnant women and their babies up to 6 weeks after birth. As a pregnant woman, you have the right to a midwife who is available 24/7, every day of the year in case of emergencies. We achieve this by working closely with a backup midwife who will also be known to you. In a small number of cases, if I am busy in another birth or during my weekends off, my backup midwife will be there for you until I can resume my care. I also work in a caring, supportive practice with 4 other midwives, who will support me and my clients in emergency situations. You will never be alone. Pregnancy and birth are not only normal, physiological processes most women in the World go through, but also the most unforgettable times of our lives as women. The majority of times everything goes well. Your midwife’s role in those cases is to be there for you, offering information and reassurance in every step of the process, and ensuring your wishes are respected and you are not subjected to unnecessary intervention. In a small number of cases, things may not go to plan. In the New Zealand system, midwives work in collaboration with other healthcare professionals (obstetricians, physiotherapists, nutritionists, haematologists, lactation consultants, support organisations...) to ensure every possible aspect of pregnancy and birth are covered. Whenever possible, I will accompany you and be present at appointments with other professionals and will remain involved in your care. You will always be informed and up-to-date with test results and developments in your pregnancy and birth, and nothing will be made without your knowledge and consent.
