Magnetic Island Golf Course A little gem. Cheeky. Challenging. Spectacular. Terrific fun. Unique One of our more well known visitors, Greg Norman, has described the fifth hole as one of his top twenty favourites anywhere. These are some of the words used by visitors to describe their golfing experience on the Magnetic Island Golf Course. The nine hole course was carved out of the granite hills of Picnic Bay and offers stunning views of Cleveland bay and Townsville from the elevated tees. Much of the natural vegetation has been retained and the fairways are littered with boulders - replacing water as a trap for players. In other words lots of trees and rocks to provide that extra challenge. Like other forested areas of the island, the course provides a refuge for native birds and animals. Curlew colonies abound under the trees and blue winged kookaburras and galahs compete noisily for hollow branches. Koala spotting is a regular distraction for players and there are few other courses with a local golfing rule that suspends play to allow resident koalas to cross the fairway to a greener tree. The clubhouse provides a licensed bar where victorious rounds can be celebrated or the agony of missed shots soothed.
