New School App This week we are launching our new school app. It is available from the AppStore (iPhone) and Google play (android) and works on "push notifications". It will be a tremendous asset to the school community but only if people download it (it's free!) and use it. Spread the word! Search for "Maitland Public School", download the app and say yes to push notifications. It's a really good new tool for our school to have. Kevin Greaves (principal)

Proposed Uniform Design Change As discussed at P&C over the past 12 months, a proposed change to our uniform is hanging in the office foyer. We have a sample of the material and design but, please note, the colours do not change. A colour chart is on the notice board as well. A note will go home tomorrow explaining the reasoning behind the change, including changing suppliers and wearability, and we will ask the school community to vote on it next week. If the proposed change is accepted, the current uniform option will continue to be available and accepted while stocks last. Come in and have a look. Kevin Greaves (principal)

Temporary Home For Chooks Needed Over the holidays, the National Trust will be doing some spraying for termites in their toilet building that backs onto our chook shed. Unfortunately, what kills termites also does chooks so we are looking for temporary housing for our chickens over the holidays. Anyone know of a chook holiday home that could help out six chickens? WELCOME BACK! Welcome back to Term 4! I will be absent for the first three weeks as I support my son through his HSC but am looking forward to returning in Week 4. Miss Coombs will be relieving principal in my absence. We also welcome back Mrs Koo this term for two days per week (Wednesdays and Thursdays) as she returns from maternity leave and also from cochlear implant surgery. Maitland Public will be a whole new world for her, I am sure, and we are looking forward to seeing her back around the place. STAFF DEVELOPMENT DAY MONDAY SEPTEMBER 14 NO STUDENTS AT SCHOOL As per all previous advice, a reminder that Monday September 14 is a Staff Professional Development Day across much of our Local Management Group (Grossmann High and its feeder primary schools). ALL MAITLAND PUBLIC SCHOOL TEACHING STAFF WILL BE ATTENDING AND THERE WILL BE NO SCHOOL FOR STUDENTS ON MONDAY. This day takes the place of the training day usually held on the first day of Term 3. Thank you for your assistance in organising alternate care arrangements for your child/ren. This is a special event for us. We don't usually change staff development days but the opportunity to work with behavioural expert, Bill Rogers, is one we cannot, as a school staff, afford to pass up.

DIABETES AWARENESS ONE-SIE DAY FRIDAY SEPT 11 Tomorrow we will be hosting Naomi (Diabetes Australia) for an awareness assembly around Type 1 diabetes. We are having a One-sie day, as has been done across Australia this week, as part of the awareness around the impact Type 1 diabetes has on many Australians. Students are asked to EITHER wear a one-sie (if they have one) or be creative and wear one of something (sock, shoe, pigtail, etc). If you don't have a one-sie, please don't go out and buy one. Students are asked also to bring along a gold coin to raise some funds towards the Artificial Pancreas Program. We will gather in the hall for about twenty minutes in the morning to collect the money (at the door) and to hear Naomi speak on the impacts Type 1 diabetes has on many children and people in our community. Parents are welcome to come for a listen if they like.

This is a Year 6 fundraiser towards their annual gift to the school (last year's was the drinking and water station). The disco area will be restricted to the hall and canteen COLA and Year 6 are running the music (block your ears!) as well as games (limbo, conga, suits). Good fun for all. Drop your kids for an hour of fun!

PUBLIC SPEAKING I had the pleasure this morning of heading across to the Kinder rooms and seeing some of the speeches being delivered in our public speaking competition. Each child I saw spoke clearly and (pretty) confidently. Dominic delivered his speech about his pesky sisters and it must have struck a nerve with half the room because all the other boys were nodding. It's a great program and our finals are next Tuesday at 9:30am. I'm heading out now for a look at the Stage 2 speeches. Kevin Greaves (principal)

HELP NEEDED We have been notified that the floor in the Maths storeroom will be replaced next week after collapsing a little while ago. It has been a while since the last clean out (I'm told there is an abacus in there Tutankhaman learnt to count on) so I am asking if there are any parents through this week who might be available to don a mask and gloves and clear the room (as well as our costume room) to help us out. Please text on 0423 959 441 or reply here if you can assist sometime through the week. Get a group of friends and make a day of it - there's nothing better than filling a skip! STRANGER DANGER - INCIDENT MAY 5 This morning, at Maitland Railway Station, two of our senior students were approached and followed by an older man and demands were made for money. They acted very appropriately in immediately running to the school and alerting staff. They were not physically harmed but, as you would understand, they were quite distressed. Police were notified and attended and CCTV footage is being reviewed. Support is being provided for the students involved. An incident such as this is a good reminder to reinforce the messages we give as teachers and parents around “stranger danger” and to also consider the safe travel of our children to and from school. We do have some particular circumstances around the school at present with road changes and students regularly traveling by train, service, bus, school bus, car, bike, scooter and foot. “Stranger danger” is another issue that impacts on our decision-making in this area. Our students displayed a commendable level of maturity in handling the situation on this occasion. We will continue, in partnership with our parent community and support organisations, to build the skills of all students in coping with such situations. It is not a nice occurrence for students and parents alike. Kevin Greaves (principal)

Congratulations to our GymMaits who have been at Star Struck this week. They have taken on a huge responsibility in representing our school in one of the biggest performing arts productions in Newcastle. All of our students involved have shown outstanding respect to all other students, staff and production team members, while constantly displaying their personal best on and off the stage. With 150 schools, 3000 students and four 3 hour performances, Star Struck is a production that we are very lucky to be a part of, and we think Star Struck was lucky to have us, too! It's a little damp around the school today but we have not had the intense rain of last year nor the wind so are looking good with little damage (apart from a couple of leaks). It might be a couple of days until the playground dries out though so our students might consider bringing a board game or the like to play during breaks - there won't be much running around. See you tomorrow. Kevin Greaves (principal)
