ALERT: There is a new Tax related scam! There's a new tax-related scam. Crooks call individuals and businesses claiming that they are with the IRS, using fake badge numbers and common surnames. Usually, the scammer's tell victims they owe taxes and will be arrested if payment is not received immediately. They sometimes threaten revocation of drivers license. The initial phone call is usually followed by a call from someone claiming to be from law enforcement or the DMV and repeating what the first caller said. As with any other scam, the caller is trying to nudge any personal information from you to enable them to steal your individual or business ID. Or, they may demand immediate payment through a wire transfer or prepaid debit card. Protect yourself at ALL times. If the IRS believes you owe money, you will receive a bill or other communication. It will not be a demanding phone call that has blind-sided you. If you are really having doubts, call the IRS yourself. They can search any debts owed with your Federal Tax ID or SSN#.
