Manbites Dog Theater, a professional non-profit theater company founded in Durham in October 1987, serves the Triangle area of central North Carolina.
Manbites Dog's purpose is to produce new and challenging theatrical events; showcase and nurture developing playwrights, directors, actors, and artists; facilitate cross-disciplinary and cross-community projects; and help strengthen this region's theatrical community. In March 1997 Manbites Dog purchased a 6,500 square foot building on Foster Street near downtown Durham to serve as a permanent performance space for the company. The building opened to the public in fall 1998. Manbites Dog has mounted more than 100 productions in our first 24 seasons, many of them regional or state premieres, as well as a broad range of local and national guest artists and companies in the Other Voices series. The 2011-2012 season, our twenty-fifth, includes four Manbites Dog productions, as well as five exciting guest presentations in our Other Voices Series. Manbites Dog's company-originated original productions over the years have included Indecent Materials, Hotline, Walking Miracles, A Tune for Tommy, Plays Well With Others, Bucknaked: a love story, Caleb Calypso and the Midnight Marauders, Nightwork, and Now You See Me. Manbites Dog Theater’s 2011-2012 season is made possible by gifts to the Durham Arts Council’s Annual Arts Fund, and support from the North Carolina Arts Council, a division of the Department of Cultural Resources; and by funding from an anonymous foundation; and by support from the Duke University Department of Theater Studies.
