Stand taller by improving your core stability and global posture. Increase your mobility and range of motion in your joints. Feel great!
Pilates was developed in the early 20th century by German born Joseph Pilates. Joseph was a sickly child and probably due to his ill health he developed a fascination with physical activity and later worked as a circus performer and boxer, among other things. Around the outbreak of WWI he was working in England, rehabilitating injured detainees. This is when he began to develop “The Pilates Method”, which it seems was an invention born of necessity – he scavenged items available to him in war conditions, such as bed springs and the like, and with these he had his clients perform resistance exercise. Fast forward to present day and you’ve probably heard of the “reformer” (think Danny Glover on daytime TV), which still uses springs to create resistance today. But it’s not the cool toys that makes Pilates such an incredibly beneficial form of exercise, nor is it the traditional exercise “repertoire”, or the focus on “correct breathing” during certain movement sequences that some Pilates elders believed essential, rather it’s the focus on performing controlled movement while the bones are in their correct alignment. Or, with old-fashioned good posture. Humans are born for movement. Unfortunately, our current lifestyle often demands long hours of inactivity or repetitive movements, for example driving a car or sitting at a desk. This can lead us to develop less than ideal posture patterns. A quality Pilates instructor can recognise these and will guide you through certain movements, or exercises, to both help you regain ideal posture and develop strength to maintain it. These movements can look easy enough, but often they’re a lot more difficult to perform than you think, much like a controlled, full-depth squat rep performed on the gym floor, like we do them at Physique Essentials. Pilates will help you build a high level of postural endurance, which makes every movement seem easier. It will also improve your physical performance at work, in the gym or on the sporting arena. Why not come down and see what Pilates group mat classes can do for you?
