Jerrabomberra Wetlands Information: Dear Friends We had a great group of hard workers for our activity on Tues 6 May. We planted drooping she-oaks and native black cyprus pines (Allocasuarina verticillata and Callitris endlicheri) into stony ground near the bike path bridge, as well as weeding around clusters of native shrubs which are growing well. The ground is stony because it's the area formed by landfill from the construction of Parliament House, so it's unusual "soil" and for plants to thrive there needs plant species that are generally found on rocky hillslopes. The drooping she-oaks are beside the bird hide and as they grow will form a screen between the bike path and Jerrabomberra Creek. The previous Sunday's Landcare for Singles event was huge. There really was a great mix of planting and socialising, as well as fabulous music before and after the planting. Over 1000 plants were planted and watered, and over 50 "love letters" sent out by people who liked someone they met at the event. What a fantastic and successful day. Thanks to ACT Landcare, Greening Australia and our hardworking senior ranger Michael for making it such a great day with huge benefits for the Wetlands. For anyone concerned about the "speed planting" aspect, the speed referred to the turnaround of planting partners - the participants did a great job of planting into deep, carefully prepared holes and watering the plants in well. I just want to say something more about our "working parties" at the Wetlands. Although they can offer a good workout and the chance to get up a sweat, everyone works to their own capability and we really value people pointing out birds and other wildlife, as well as the chance to get to know each other and enjoy people's company. So even if you don't swing a mattock, you could come and take photos or do sketching, bring your binoculars, put together plant guards, or just come and have a chat. We'd love to have you along. COMING ACTIVITIES AT JERRABOMBERRA WETLANDS Sun 18 May - Our weekend revegetation activity is unusual because it's on this Sunday (it's usually a Sat). We'll be planting near the billabongs and Jerrabomberra Creek, and will be joined by another group who are keen to learn. We'll finish up with a late morning tea, so there's a great opportunity to socialise, meet new people, and exchange ideas. We're starting from the Wetlands offices at 9.30am on Sunday. Tues 3 June - Our usual Tues working party will start at 9.30am from the Wetlands offices. We'll be going out to do some planting and weeding: we'll have native understorey plants to put in, and we'd like to clear some weeds from around the bird hides.
I'm very excited to announce that I've joined Peter Blackshaw as their Jerrabomberra Specialist. I was the local agent there for approximately 5 years & I'm thrilled to be back! Jerrabomberra has a unique & delightful landscape - especially the Wetlands. I'll be posting pictures that excite me & will share newsworthy information with you.
