FAQ's How does Laser Tattoo Removal work? Tattoo pigment is held in the dermis by fibres of collagen, Laser Tattoo Removal works by fragmenting the pigment molecules of the tattoo releasing them from the collagen. These fragments are then 'collected' by cells called macrophages, these macrophages filter the fragmented particles thought they lymphatic system then through the bloodstream to be excreted via kidneys into the urine over the course of approximately 2 weeks. How many treatments will I need? Usually several treatments are needed, Laser Tattoo Removal isn't a magic wand that will erase a tattoo immediately. The amount of treatments needed depend on many factors such as; skin type, location, colour and depth of tattoo, density of the ink and age of the client. I try not to estimate how many treatments a tattoo will need to be completely removed as this could cause disappointment if more treatments are needed. Many clients are choosing laser treatment to fade an existing tattoo enough for a cover up. Can all colours be removed? No, yellow and white inks absorb the laser energy very poorly and therefore are very difficult to remove. Metallic and fluorescent inks do not respond to laser treatment as they reflect rather than absorb. Is treatment painful? Some (including myself) liken the feeling to a slapped sunburn. It can be sore but is usually tolerable. Numbing creams can be purchased over the counter at the pharmacy and applied prior to treatment. How do I look after my tattoo after laser treatment? Aftercare is simple, keep the area clean and dry. Use a cold compress for relief after treatment and it is imperative that you do not 'pick' at any scabs or blisters that may form as this can lead to infections and then scarring! Using a high SPF sunscreen is a must, I personally use SPF 50. Healing time is usually 6-8 weeks. I am having 3 of my own tattoos removed, I have so far had 2 treatments on each.
