Description

The center offers an interdisciplinary major in modern European studies (EUS), designed for students who want to broaden their awareness of the European experience and to prepare for international careers or advanced study. Its curriculum is designed to give majors disciplinary breadth as well as expertise in a specialty of their choosing. Most EUS majors also participate in one of the Vanderbilt study abroad programs in Europe and/or reside in the International House on campus.

From 2009-2015, he headed a research group at the University of Düsseldorf that explored the mechanisms behind different levels of ideological polarization in the USA and Europe, funded by a Schumpeter-Fellowship of the Volkswagen-Foundation.
His research interests include comparative politics, American politics, political parties, sociology of knowledge, and methods of political ethnography
In Spring 2017, Torben taught "The Rise of Right-Wing Populist Parties in Advanced Democracies" and "West European Politics."
In the fall of 2017, he will teach "Social Movements" and "Ideological Polarization in Historical and Comparative Perspective."
