Mayura (Kannada = peacock ) embodies all the qualities bestowed by authentic Abhyanga Marma massage: transformation, rebirth, beauty and immortality.
Mayura (Kannada = peacock ) is one of the sacred birds of the Hindu mythology. The legend states that the Mayura was created from the feathers of Garuda, another semi-divine mythical bird of Hindu mythology. Garuda is believed to be a vahana (conveyance) of Vishnu, one of the Trimurti (the Preserver, and redeemer of humanity) and Dhanavantari, the God of Ayurveda. In images of the mayura as a mythical bird, it is depicted as killing a snake, which according to a number of Hindu scriptures, is a symbol of cycle of time. It is no surprise then that in Shamanism (at the roots of Ayurveda), the Peacock is the Phoenix that rises from the ashes ~ a symbol of transformation, rebirth and immortality, the conquering of Time. What is Abhyanga? Abhyanga (Sanskrit अभ्यंग or अभ्यङ्ग "Oil Massage") is a form of therapeutic massage used in Ayurveda, the holistic system of medicine that developed in India more than 5000 years ago. The medicinal (herb-infused) oils used provide nourishment to the deepest tissues and are integral to the unique therapeutic benefits offered by Abhyanga, which extend well beyond those of more conventional massage forms. All the massage techniques ever developed in the world, including Shiatsu, Thai yoga massage, acupressure (Tui Na) and reflexology, come from one source: Abhyanga. Based on the deepest understanding of the body and mind on Earth, Abhyanga uniquely customizes every aspect of massage technique for the patient, from the pressure, sequence and direction of strokes to the gentle stimulation of marma, specific pressure points that catalyze the healing processes of body and mind. The medicinal oils used in Abhyanga are tailored to the unique needs of the patient*. *Note: This is why an Integrative Ayurvedic Consultation must be completed before receiving your first abhyanga (full-body) massage treatment. Belinda's unique approach to Abhyanga fluidly integrates traditional techniques with aromatherapy using devotional Indian attars, informed by integral body-mind wisdom distilled from more than 20 years of study, practice and experience of Yoga, Ayurveda and Western science. Belinda is the first to offer authentic Abhyanga and Marma treatments in Vancouver, ie. from training in the gurushishya tradition (one-on-one with a guru).
