OK, a little update, except that there is not much to update. We haven't talked to near enough investors at this point. We thought we might have a good one but it's not our first Rodeo and we know that 9 out of 10 potential investors don't pan out. We've also been offered several locations but honestly none that are very viable. Yes, there are several empty restaurants over around 82nd and University, but people in the restaurant business quickly learn to avoid locations that have seen several restaurants go out of business. Others, such as the Italian Garden are just not realistic. Not enough space and not enough parking. The old Grandy's building on 50th St. is very run down and the owners are up north somewhere and unresponsive. Most of the fast food places are too small for our purposes and the only possibly viable location is the old Mexican Food restaurant up on 4th near the Walmart. We will see about that, but it too lacks some key features we are looking for. Namely our ideal location would be in Southwest Lubbock near population with a drive through, about 200 seats, good parking, etc. We are continuing to work on this though and I am sure we will make more progress once we actually get out of the old building. By the way, we are selling a lot of the equipment right now if anyone is interested. Where ever we end up (if we end up) we will probably be in a little different circumstances. For example, we would expect to have a walk in freezer rather than the half a dozen stand alone boxes we use now.

If you are considering a new location, consider the former Wild Burger place on 50th St.. It is a nice place and much more centrally located than somewhere in southwest Lubbock. The popular Brittany was there for a number of years and we ate there two or three times a week. Would love to see you move there.

IT'S THE REALLY BIG SHOW WITH THE DRAKE HAYES BAND CLOSING DOWN THE MEAN WOMAN GRILL FOR GOOD THIS SATURDAY AT 6:30PM 1/2 PRICE BEER, WINE AND MIXED DRINKS ALONG WITH PHILLY CHEESE STEAK SANDWICHES. DON'T MISS THIS! Drake Hayes grew up in Acuff, Texas where he was exposed to a wide variety of music from a very early age. It came as no surprise when he took a strong interest beginning in his early teens. Throughout middle and high school Drake began playing bass guitar, guitar and harmonica. While in school, Drake was a serious player with strong dedication who was quickly noticed by other musicians. Soon after, Drake was touring the national circuit with several top acts including Mark McKinney, Matt Kimbrow, The Proud Cut Ponies and Jeremy Stedding. As exciting as touring and playing with other acts was, Drake wanted to chase his own dream. So he began to write and cultivate his own material. Before too long, he was ready to start his own band. In 2014, Drake met Matthew Harber, an accomplished guitar and pedal steel player freshly imported from Austin, Texas. The two hit it off and immediately began to scout for a rhythm section. As luck would have it, they quickly met up with two talented students from South Plains College and formed the Drake Hayes Band. Shane Johnson from Hereford, Texas plays a mean bass and Jason Borocio from Belton, Texas is a steady force on drums. After the formation of the Drake Hayes Band, all four musicians quickly began writing and composing a catalog of original material as well as putting together an impressive set list ranging from old-school tunes of Waylon Jennings to modern tracks from Randy Rogers. The band’s different styles and varied influences have come together to create a unique and powerful sound in the world of Texas Country. If you have a chance to see them perform, it’s a show that should not be missed. You know you've got a great country band when you call up the band leader and arrange for a gig while he's on his tractor. MAY 14TH WILL BE THE FINAL DAY AT THE MEAN WOMAN GRILL. THE PROPERTY WAS SOLD TO A HOTEL CHAIN AND THUS WE HAVE LOST OUR LEASE AND MUST MOVE OUT. BUT UNTIL THEN WE ARE GOING TO HAVE A LOT OF FUN. SO IF YOU'VE NEVER BEEN TO THE MEAN WOMAN GRILL, NOW IS THE TIME. COME HAVE SOME GREAT AMERICAN COMFORT FOOD AND A WONDERFUL TIME WITH FAMILY ORIENTED LIVE MUSIC!

IT'S KELLY HASTEY SOLO ON THE MEAN WOMAN GRILL STAGE SATURDAY AT 12:00 NOON. Everyone loves Keely Hastey at the Mean Woman Grill and we feel doubly blessed to have him on our stage twice this week, once with the Lone Star Cowboy Church band on Thrusday and then for a very special solo performance Friday at noon. This will be his first solo performance at the Grill. Kelly Hastey is a veteran working musician and a professional guitarist and vocalist that knows his business. Kelly has worked with many musicians throughout the country, but has dedicated most of his time to his home state of Texas and local music lovers by playing with his band: Texas Cadillac Jack. He has been playing professionally since he was sixteen years old and he began playing at six years old when his father taught him to play the mandolin. He quickly moved on to guitar and is currently learning to play the steel guitar as well. MAY 14TH WILL BE THE FINAL DAY AT THE MEAN WOMAN GRILL. THE PROPERTY WAS SOLD TO A HOTEL CHAIN AND THUS WE HAVE LOST OUR LEASE AND MUST MOVE OUT. BUT UNTIL THEN WE ARE GOING TO HAVE A LOT OF FUN. EARLY MORNING REIGN TAKE THE MEAN WOMAN GRILL STAGE FOR THE FIRST TIME FRIDAY EVENING AT 6:30PM When Paul Honesto was in the Army, there was a cadence they marched to that mentions the heat of the night and in the early morning rain. That particular cadence stuck with him enough for it to inspire the name of the cover band known as Early Morning Reign. “I was in the Army for 17 years and one of my military cadences starts off, ‘In the early morning rain or the heat of the night,” ’ Early Morning Reign vocalist Honesto said. “I thought ‘In the Heat of the Night’ was a television series, so that didn’t sound cool, so we worked with the early morning rain part. I thought that sounded cool.” While working out the kinks of naming the band, Honesto was out on the town and saw an individual wearing a T-shirt where it used “reign” instead of “rain.” He worked in that little twist, and it just seemed to stick. Honesto said he started Early Morning Reign with his son Eric, who wanted to perform music with his father. Honesto’s son played the bass after returning from Afghanistan in 2008. The vocalist said his son left the band and attends Texas Tech, where he is majoring in accounting. Other original members include Jason Samaniego and Cruz DeLuna on drums. Current band members still include Honesto on vocals and Arthur Ramos on guitar, Jimmy Ramos on bass and Jon Shaw on drums. “We just kind of put it together,” Honesto said. “We kind of put some members together to keep it going once my son left. These guys have been playing for quite some time, so it just kind of worked itself out.” What also worked itself out was the sound of the band. Honesto said Early Morning Reign performs cover tunes with a wide spectrum of genres. He said the guys in the band have been playing long enough to know what keeps the people excited and just work off the crowd’s feedback and energy. They also provide a high-energy show because Honesto said people want to come out to listen to music and forget their troubles. “We understand people work all week and they finally get to go out to listen to some music with their significant others or whatever,” he said. “We keep it upbeat because they don’t want to listen to sad songs. It’s a pretty energetic set. It is constantly energetic and if you don’t like one song just wait, and you will like the next one.” Honesto said many times they will get requests from the crowd, and they have enough experience to be able to play just about anything. As an example, Honesto said one particular set had fans screaming out a request for Neil Diamond’s “Sweet Caroline.” “We just go off of the crowd and we can pretty much play anything,” he said. “Sometimes you just accidentally know it. We were just laughing and having fun. We are like a live jukebox.” Honesto said Early Morning Reign really tries to cover songs that aren’t normally performed by other bands. Some of their favorite bands and performers to cover are acts such as Godsmack, Avenged Sevenfold, Tool and Stevie Ray Vaughan. There have been some times in the past where the band was inactive and a few of those times were when Honesto was deployed or stationed in other areas of the United States. As for the upcoming performance, Honesto said to expect a lot of variety and an in-your-face performance. “These guys are talented enough to make all of that happen,” he said. MAY 14TH WILL BE THE FINAL DAY AT THE MEAN WOMAN GRILL. THE PROPERTY WAS SOLD TO A HOTEL CHAIN AND THUS WE HAVE LOST OUR LEASE AND MUST MOVE OUT. BUT UNTIL THEN WE ARE GOING TO HAVE A LOT OF FUN. THURSDAYS AT 6:30PM IS FAMILY AND FAITH EVENING AT THE MEAN WOMAN GRILL THIS WEEK WITH ROBERT LOPEZ AND LAUREL GUZMAN Catch our last Family and Faith evening this Thursday before we close down. See below for more details. Robert is a professional musician who attended the Department of Creative Arts at SPC studying both commercial music and sound tech and that's basically where he learned to play musical instruments. He actually started out singing in church choirs under West Garza and he credits Garza with his musical inspiration. It was West who guided him and in the end, was instrumental in Robert taking his current job as Director of Music Ministry at Our Lady of Guadalupe Lubbock. Yet, well, though he definitely plans to continue in the music ministry, there is that part of him that still wants to be a rock star. That actually has more to do with why he attended DCA and he still entertains that ultimate goal, though apparently having a considerable amount of common sense, he stands on the bedrock of his music ministry profession. It's a great way to support himself, stay with the music and at the same time help others. Seventeen year old Laurel currently performs with the Cactus Kids at the Cactus Theater and helps lead worship at her parish's youth mass.
