Description

Medomsley Bangers raises pigs for sausages and pork products. Due to health issues I have had to refocus my business and at last something positive is coming out of it. In January 2013 my mother was diagnosed with Mesothelioma, a terminal cancer caused by exposure to asbestos. As a family, we have had amazing support and advice from The Mick Knighton Mesothelioma Research Fund (MKMRF) and from the members of the North Tyneside and South Tyneside Mesothelioma Support Groups. The charity and groups were set up by Chris Knighton MBE, along with some ladies, recently widowed, in memory of their husbands who had died from Mesothelioma. At the time there was very little information, help, knowledge, support or research into this disease. They have been extraordinarily successfully; MKMRF has now raised over £1 million for research into new and improved treatments for Mesothelioma. It has created Europe's first Tissue Bank from sufferers of the disease which means Drug Companies and researchers have now access to genetic material to try and develop a cure, or at least better treatments for this always terminal disease. MKMRF has and continues to tirelessly promote awareness of this terrible disease. Additionally it has now just appointed and funded the first Mesothelioma Nurse in the North East - this will have a huge impact for local sufferers. In February 2015 I was back in hospital for my, to date, 3rd surgery. Whilst waiting for the op, bored and wanting it over and done with, I spent some time on the internet. I discovered two pigs available locally......by the time I came out of recovery, the deal was done for my first pigs. About 3 weeks later a further 6 arrived. Like the first 2, they are all Kune Kune pigs, a New Zealand breed which are ideal for first time pig keepers. There was some method to my madness as it gave me the opportunity to put into motion the little idea that had been germinating in my mind for some time. By raising the pigs and producing pork products and sausages money from each sale of Medomsley Bangers will be going to the Mick Knighton Mesothelioma Research Fund. The pigs are living outside as naturally as possible. I'm operating as low impact, low food miles, sustainable and symbiotically for the benefit of the land, livestock and environment. This also includes the horses, sheep, bees, horticultural, orchard, poultry and vegetable projects - one benefits the other. My first pig will be going to the sausage factory at the end of April 2015. Please support my new business and in turn support MKRF. Please register your interest and like the page. First batch of sausages are at £3/ per lb. 20% will be donated to MKMRF. They are being butchered at Janet Mckie's High Strothers Butchery on the beautiful Gibside Estate, just in the shadow of the iconic Gibside Chapel. Many thanks, David Cottrell

The 2nd half is hanging for another week, so sausages will be ready next Thursday (7.5.15) - and in time for the South Tyneside Mesothelioma Support Group meeting, if anyone is interested. Had some good feedback so far :- Pork and Leek - "best sausages ever tasted" !! Tomato and Basil - "Really enjoyed them! The skin turned a good colour, texture of the meat was good and seasoning was good too.." Any more feedback - gratefully received! Next batch will be Pork, Pork and Apple, Cumberland and Caramelised Onion. 2 requests for garlic - that will be the batch after! Cheers David

Sausages are really high meat content - something like 95% (compared to the supermarket ones at 40ish %) - will confirm exact % once made. They'll be made from all the best cuts, not like the supermarket ones. AND unlike Tesco's - no horse in them - pork only plus seasoning for the flavoured ones. £3.00 / lb and 20% goes to the Mick Knighton Mesothelioma Research Fund. The flavours available are:- Pork Pork and leek Pork and apple Cumberland Garlic and black pepper Chilli pepper Ginger tomato coriander pork Sicilian - pepper oregano thyme fennel Tomato and basil Garlic and spring onion Caribbean Toffee apple Cranberry and apple I will definitely get them made up in the plain pork, but undecided on a couple of the flavoured ones - can you let me know what would be the most popular please? Cheers David

2 green eggs today so 5 must be laying.... not very prolifically though!!

Published on 2015-09-04 20:55:13 GMT

Happier now - three eggs today all brown. Had a couple of green eggs over the last week or so, so that means 4 hens are laying, though unfortunately not every day! Hope the rest get a move on.

Apparently it is very common to see tomato plants growing at sewage treatment works. I made some raised beds with the soil where the pigs were originally. For weeks I've been getting confused by what looked to be loads of tomato plants coming through as I knew I hadn't planted any. Eventually the penny dropped...... they are definitely tomato plants. The pigs are quite partial to tomatoes......

Big surprise, just looked in at the quail eggs that are on day 16 for hatching. 10 out already and it's only day 16! Should take 17/18 days before they hatch.

I know Christmas still seems a long way off, Re the pigs in blankets - did anyone think they'd want some?

Published on 2015-08-20 23:32:29 GMT

Cheque raised for Mick Knighton Mesothelioma Research Fund from the sales of piggies no 2 and 3 - £105.00. Still a few packs left - pork, Cumberland, chilli and lime, pork and leek, sweet chilli. Your chance to raise funds for @Mick Knighton mesothelioma research fund as 20% from each pack sold is donated. MKMRF funds research into this always fatal disease. Also set up the MesobanK - collects, stores and distributes tissue to researchers - a world first. Let me know if you are interested in any sausages! Cheers David

Asparagus beds looking good. Might get a small crop next year, but really will be 2017 (!) before it's decent volume. Sunflowers and borage, planted for the bees, now out in force. Not that my bees seem to have found them though!
