Keeping the Mary Erskine bond alive and kicking!
The Guild today has over 3000 members world wide. The parents of today’s pupils pay the subscription to the FP Guild as part of the school fee but many older former pupils are not members unless they or their parents elected to pay a life membership when they left school. In recent years, the Summer Reunions have encouraged many of this group to join and on average, it gains 20 new members every year. The Guild strives to provide something of relevance for all age groups whether it is practical support or a means of getting together on a more social basis. In total it has 12 purposes but in summary they are all about communicating and forming links with former pupils of all ages as well as providing opportunities for them to meet either socially or network together. The Guild is keen to emphasise the huge resource that former pupils are to each other throughout life whether it is to provide support and contacts during our working lives or friendship and fellowship during retirement. In addition the Guild aims to form good links with the school, the staff and its pupils by contributing to school activities and providing support where appropriate. Recently the FP initiative to have a Christmas Fair at Ravelston has raised the profile of the Guild with the school community and it is important that it has a strong identity both with the pupils and their parents. While the main activities of the Guild take place in Edinburgh, there are also a number of Branch Clubs, from Highlands’ Branch in the north and the London Branch in the south, which have regular events. In addition there are Associate Clubs which principally provide sport activities such as golf, hockey and curling.

Many thanks to Sylvia Whitman (Class of 1999) for her inspirational speech at the S4-S6 Prize Giving today. Sylvia was a boarder at The Mary Erskine School and now runs the Paris based Shakespeare and Company Bookshop @Shakespeare_Co
It's great to see you all are enjoying our Facebook page. While we have so many of you interacting online, we would like to ask what would make you actually come and participate in our Summer Reunion. The Reunion is open to all FPs but each year there is a focus on year groups celebrating 10, 20, 30 etc years of leaving school. There is an opportunity to catch up, a guided tour around the school, a year group (or with your friends) photo, a chance to look at the archives and some lunch. We, the Guild Committee represent you and take on any comments, ideas and recommendations. Please let us know your thoughts...We may not be able to arrange a reunion in the Bahamas but we are eager to hear how our events can meet your needs! Please comment below, or PM if your prefer. Mind you if enough of us want to go to the Bahamas... #maryerskineontour
Thanks to the ladies from our Tayside branch for giving such a warm welcome to our Vice President, Rachel, at their annual dinner last night! Everyone had a fantastic time reminiscing over school days. (And also reminding ourselves how glad we are not to be having to do exams anymore!) Looking forward to many more events like this in the future.
Why not pop into the Merchants' Hall, Hanover Street, Edinburgh this Saturday, 31st January between 10 am and 12 noon? Come and enjoy a catch up with friends over cup of tea or coffee and some delicious home baking. We have also arranged short tours of both the vaults and the archives for anyone interested. Look forward to seeing you there.

We would be delighted if you could join us on Saturday 15th November at MES to enjoy a festive shopping experience at our Annual Christmas Fair from 10am until 3pm. We have booked over 40 excellent stalls offering something for everyone including food and drink, jewellery, homeware, gifts, sports goods, accessories, arts and crafts to name but a few. There will be tea and coffee, home baking and hot filled rolls available throughout the day in the Hopetoun Hall. We have some fabulous prizes in our raffle this year with several draws made during the day. We have even managed to secure a visit from Santa, so don’t forget to pop into his Grotto and let him know what’s on your Christmas wish list! Entry to the Christmas Fair is via the main reception area and costs £2 for adults (children are free). All proceeds from the day will be shared equally between The FP Guild GAP Year Fund, Access to Excellence and The Chesney Trust, which works to advance the education of girls in Northern Malawi.
