Our History When you take a look at the history of Metro Health Services Federal Credit Union, you discover that our story is really a tale of two financial institutions. Nearly 60 years ago (1951), Safeway Food Stores of Omaha was granted a charter to form a credit union designed to serve the financial needs of their employees. A short while later (1952), employees of the University of Nebraska Medical Center came upon a similar idea, that creating a credit union would provide both themselves and their co-workers with an alternative for value-priced financial services. With that, the University of Nebraska Medical Center Federal Credit Union was born. These two separate institutions operated both individually and successfully for many years until 1982, when a decision by Safeway Food Store executives eliminated retail operations in Nebraska. The move left Safeway Omaha Employees Federal Credit Union with a weighty decision... How best to continue as a viable financial institution? The answer came in the form of a merger. And, in 1982 Safeway Omaha Employees FCU and the University of Nebraska Medical Center FCU joined forces to become one. As a result of the merger, a new name (Metro Health Services Federal Credit Union) was selected for the newly formed institution. In that year, assets totaled $10 million with the credit union operating out of two small offices. As the credit union grew, so did the list of available member services, including the addition of mortgage lending products in 1987. Shortly thereafter (1988) the credit union opened a new Saddle Creek office which proved to be a launching pad for significant growth. New offices were added in '95, '01, '07 and '11 to bring the current total of branch offices to six. Today, with over 30,000 members, Metro Credit Union is the third largest credit union operating in Nebraska. Assets currently exceed $228 million and the list of available products and services rivals that of any area financial institution. Despite this growth, the goal of providing our members with value-priced financial services all delivered with friendly personal service has remained intact.
