We are fighting maternal and infant mortality in Haiti. Join us. Haiti is a beautiful country with a history of resistance and solidarity. It is also very poor and has the highest maternal, infant, and under 5 mortality rates in the Western Hemisphere. Midwives For Haiti, a 501(c)(3) non-profit, is actively reducing maternal and infant mortality in Haiti by training skilled birth attendants and getting them to the rural women who need their care. We deliver 6 high impact projects: 1. We train Haitian nurses to be Skilled Birth Attendants in a 12-month intensive program based on WHO standards. The Haitian teaching staff is supported by visiting midwives and medical professionals in our Volunteer Teaching Program. To date, we have trained 124 Skilled Birth Attendants who are now working throughout the country, providing quality care to tens of thousands of women and children each year. 2. We staff and run a Mobile Prenatal Clinic that provides comprehensive maternity care to pregnant women in 23 rural villages throughout the Central Plateau. Each year, we deliver over 7,000 patient care visits. 3. Our Matwòn Outreach Program works with matwòns, or Haiti's Traditional Birth Attendants, who attend an estimated 75% of deliveries in Haiti, all of which are out-of-hospital. Our collaborative program not only offers formal training in achieving clean, safe deliveries, but also incorporates other strategies that have been statistically proven to reduce rates of maternal and neonatal mortality. To date, we have trained over a hundred matwòns. 4. Maternity Center at Hospital St. Therese: In partnership with the Haitian Ministry of Health, we pay the salaries of 18 auxiliary-midwives to ensure mothers and newborns have access to care 24/7. We also provide resources and materials to strengthen the existing health infrastructure. 5. In July 2014, we launched the Postnatal Care Program to ensure that every mother who delivers at Hospital Ste. Therese and her baby are thoroughly evaluated before discharge, given excellent education and scheduled for follow-up visits in our new postnatal clinic. With this program, we've increased the number of patients receiving postnatal care at Hospital St. Therese from 1% to 93%. 6. In the fall of 2015, we are opened the Carrie Wortham Birth Center, our first rural birth center in the remote community of Cabestor in the Central Plateau. Midwives For Haiti educates Haitian nurses to be skilled birth attendants and then empowers them to reach the women who need their care. By scaling health worker capacity within Haiti, we are reducing maternal and infant mortality and creating sustainable change for our graduates and the families they serve. Our 5 health programs are run by and for Haitians and supported by international medical volunteers and staff. -To reduce maternal and infant mortality rates in Haiti by teaching midwifery skills. -To enhance maternal health by providing regular prenatal and postnatal care, including preventative services, by trained midwives. -To provide safe, clean places for women to give birth. -Incorporate care of the newborn, vaccines, dehydration treatment and prevention along with breastfeeding support with maternal care.
