Description

We are a group of academic researchers and graduate students who are focusing on the health of Canadian military and veteran families. We represent research being done at universities such as Queen's University, Mount Saint Vincent University, and the University of Calgary. Some of our research focuses on children, some on spouses, and some on families as a whole. We also engage with professions who work with military and veteran family members, including healthcare professionals and educators. This page highlights ongoing research projects and creates an opportunity to engage those who are interested in participating in this important research area. This understanding will help to improve services and programming that address the challenges military and veteran families may be experiencing and to leverage military family strengths and promote resilience within military families. All research described on this page is conducted in affiliation with Queen’s University, Mount Saint Vincent University, and/or the University of Calgary and has been granted ethical clearance by the Principal Investigator's university research ethics board.

General Info

Several research projects underway for which participants are needed: 1. Targeting the Mental Health of Canadian Children Growing up in Military Families. The purpose of this research is to gain an understanding of how military life impacts the ability of children growing up in military families to cope and adapt. The research aims to increase knowledge of any challenges and issues experienced by military families with respect to their children’s mental health, as well as how things can be improved. We are seeking military families and professionals (in health care and education) who work with military families to participate in an interview with the researchers. If you are interested in participating this research or you would like additional information please contact Dr. Heidi Cramm, the principle investigator for this research project. Dr. Cramm can be reached via telephone at 613-533-6094 or via email at Heidi.cramm@queensu.ca. 2. Navigating systems and supports for children with autism spectrum disorder: The experiences of military families in the context of mandatory relocation. The main goal of this study is to get a better understanding of military families’ experiences when they are posted to a new community and need to access services and supports for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). We are seeking parents of children with ASD who are growing up in military families to participate in an interview with the researchers to talk about your experience accessing services for your child after a military related move. If you are interested in participating or have questions please contact the principle investigator, Dr. Garth Smith, at 613-544-3310 ext. 3135, or the co-investigator Dr. Heidi Cramm at 613-533-6094 or via email at Heidi.cramm@queensu.ca.
