Since 1999, the Milwaukee School of Capoeira, also known as the Associação de Capoeira Angola Corpo e Movimento, has partnered with local organizations and educational institutions to bring Capoeira classes, youth programs, events and performances to Southeastern Wisconsin. Through Capoeira we aim to inspire unity, creativity, health, and wellness in our community. We are excited to share our passion for Capoeira with you. Group History The Milwaukee School of Capoeira, also known as the Associação de Capoeira Angola Corpo e Movimento was founded in 1999 by Contra-Mestre Jim. Professor Steve, Steven Antonson, became the instructor for the Milwaukee Capoeira school in 2000. He began studying Capoeira in 1997. He travels to Brazil to continue researching the art of Capoeira. Steve teaches and performs Capoeira throughout Southeastern Wisconsin, and he has recently been invited to teach a Capoeira course for the Department of Dance at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Contra-Mestre Jim, James Sera, is an Anthropologist and graduate student of Mestre Angola. He has conducted research on aspects of the African Diaspora for nearly 20 years. Contra-Mestre Jim has established Capoeira schools in Pasadena, CA, Milwaukee, WI, Statesville, NC, and Washington, DC and serves as the Director of the non-profit organization, Brazilian Cultural Foundation. The Associação de Capoeira Angola Corpo e Movimento, or Body and Movement Capoeira Angola Association was founded by Mestre Angola, Antônio Albino Soares, in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil in 1980. Mestre Angola learned Capoeira from his teacher, Mestre Vermelho, Mauricio Lemos de Carvalho – a student of Mestre Pastinha. Mestre Angola is a highly respected and admired Capoeira Master who dedicates his life to improving his community through the art of Capoeira.
