NJMS Mini Med - 2014
Have you ever wondered what it is like to study medicine? This is your opportunity to experience medical education presented in lay language. The faculty of the New Jersey Medical School has designed Mini-Med, a nine-week sequence of dinner hour/seminars, formal lectures, and small group discussions, as well as several elective courses, to provide you with just such an opportunity. Sessions begin each Wednesday evening at 5:45 p.m. with a 1-hour dinner/seminar conducted by medical student preceptors. Kosher and vegetarian dietary selections may be made upon request. This is followed by lectures from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. You may also enroll in three elective courses given on select weekends. One elective, which lasts for two hours, deals with accessing medical information and will be offered by the librarians of the George F. Smith Library of the Health Sciences. A second elective, cardio-pulmonary physiology, involves information on normal as well as abnormal heart ands lung function. The third elective, offers students an opportunity to become certified in cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Guided tours and demonstrations of the laboratories of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine facilities as well as tours of the Emergency /Trauma Unit sponsored by the Department of Emergency Services will be conducted. As an added value, you can post comments/questions on our electronic bulletin board during the nine-week program. Some of your questions may serve as discussion points in the small group sessions before each of the lectures. Your own health is our most important concern and we believe that an educated patient is your doctor's best ally. We have, therefore, established a free screening clinic that will take place before one of the weekly sessions. A medical student will personally be assigned to you to insure that you have a most rewarding and exciting learning experience. Welcome
