The Minor Planet Center (MPC) operates at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO) in Cambridge, MA, under the auspices of Division III of the International Astronomical Union (IAU). The MPC is responsible for the designation of minor bodies in the solar system: minor planets, natural satellites and comets (in conjunction with the Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams). The MPC is also responsible for the collection, computation, checking and dissemination of astrometric observations and orbits for minor planets, comets, and natural satellites, as well as helping observers coordinate their observations of Near Earth Objects (NEOs). In short, we receive observations from around the world of minor planets; we catalogue and analyse them, and maybe most importantly, search for NEOs (asteroids and comets) that might be on a collision course with Earth.
