FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT CRYOTHERAPY: ● What is the origin of Whole Body Cryotherapy? In 1978 Whole Body Cryotherapy was developed in Japan by Dr. Yamauchi who was treating pain and inflammation in his patients with rheumatoid arthritis. It has been extensively studied and refined in Europe over the past two decades. Sports, Health and Spa professionals in the U.S. use Cryotherapy for inflammation reduction, muscle recovery, pain management and skin care. ● Is Whole Body Cryotherapy a proven? treatment for recovery and health? Cryotherapy has been used for around thirty years in Europe and Asia. In fact over the past seven years more than two million sessions have been completed in Europe alone. Professional athletes in the NBA, MLB, NHL and NFL have made Cryotherapy an important part of their recovery. ● How does Whole Body Cryotherapy work? We use an upright, step-in whole body cryo sauna steps which uses gasiform nitrogen to rapidly lower the skin surface temperature to about 32°F. The cryosauna temperature ranges between -238°F to -274°F for the two to three minutes of treatment. Skin receptors sense the cold and send signals to the brain to promote regulatory functions of the body and release anti-inflammatory proteins and calming endorphins into the bloodstream. ● How often should I get whole body Cryotherapy sessions to achieve results? Most clients immediately feel energized after their first session, however we recommend five to ten sessions in close succession to establish the body’s baseline and to have lasting beneficial effects. After this initial loading period, maintenance treatments of 2-3 times a week. ● How can whole body cryotherapy help with recovery from an injury? Depending on the severity of your injury, recovery times vary. Most people find that their recovery times improve drastically. ● What do I wear in the Cryosauna? You will be provided with dry socks and slippers for your feet. We also provide gloves for your hands. Men should have a dry briefs; not required for women. All metal and Jewelry must be removed watches, chains, bracelets and earrings, etc. To optimize your bodys reaction you will need to expose as much skin surface as possible. ● How does Cryotherapy compare to an Ice Bath? The Body's response to cryotherapy sessions is a very different response. Three minutes of extreme, dry cold reaches only the top skin layers and cold receptors causing the brain to restrict blood flow to an internal cycle. Cryotherapy causes the body to release anti-inflammatory proteins and endorphins resulting in super-charged blood. In an ice bath, fifteen minutes of cold water initially causes the body to move blood to the extremities and results in a chilled lowering of the body's core temperature. Ice baths do no supercharge the blood. ● Is Nitrogen gas dangerous to humans? No. Nitrogen is a non-toxic gas. The air that we breathe is made up of 16% Oxygen, 1% Hydrogen, 78% Nitrogen and 5% other components. Nitrogen is common and safe. ● Is Cryotherapy comfortable? Cryotherapy involves dry, hyper-cooled air flowing over the skin. Your muscles or organs are never frozen. Before entering the Cryosauna, clients are instructed on proper protective clothing if necessary. Privacy is maintained as only the head is visible. You will feel a dry gaseous cold. It is considered well-tolerated. Cryotherapy improves circulation throughout the body and stimulates production of brown fat, so your future ability to tolerate cold should improve. ● How do I feel after a session? During your cryo session, the brain receives cold signals from the skin and triggers the auto-preservation mechanism within the body. This causes the release of endorphins, the hormones that make us feel alert and energetic into the bloodstream which relax the body and flush toxins away. This process is responsible for the feel good and energetic mood of the client which can last up to 8 hours. Many clients expressed having a euphoric feeling immediately after and the best night of sleep after a Cryo session. ● Can I catch a cold from Whole Body Cryotherapy? No. The immediate cold impact of cryotherapy will raise the internal body temperature for a short period of time. The overall stimulation of the immune system can actually help decrease the severity and frequency of future colds. ● Will I feel claustrophobic in the Cryosauna? No, you shouldn't. Your entire head remains exposed and above the Cryosauna. The door will not. If need you can always push the door open and step out. A staff member is there through the entire process until the session has ended. ● Do I have to take a shower before or after a session? No, you do not. Showering is not necessary after cryotherapy. The procedure is dry and does not make your skin wet. Many of our client’s come by during their lunch break. The entire treatment is only 3 minutes. ● Who should use Whole Body Cryotherapy? Whole Body Cryotherapy benefits everybody from elite athletes seeking muscle recovery to people with chronic pain and inflammatory conditions, and those seeking weight loss and skin rejuvenation. Cryotherapy is used post-surgery to accelerate healing and reduce pain without the side effects of pain medications. Younger clients, 14-18, can use Cryotherapy with a parent’s consent. ● What are the risks of Whole Body Cryotherapy? Cryotherapy is well tolerated and has minimal risks. Blood pressure fluctuates during the procedure by up to 10 points systolically (reverses after the procedure as peripheral circulation returns to normal), allergic reaction to extreme cold (rare), claustrophobia, anxiety, activation of some viral conditions (cold sores, etc.) due to stimulation of the immune system. Protective clothing (socks, gloves, undergarments) must be dry in order to avoid frostbite. ● Who should not use Whole Body Cryotherapy?
