One of my favorite runs to do on the hill, but it is a long one. Took an hour and a half with the double stroller. Even if you don't live by Signal Hill Trails, this is still one you can do anywhere. I started with the biggest loop - Hill to 21st around to Cherry and up Skyline. Then I completed a smaller loop. 21st to Stanley to Skyline. Then smaller - Hill to Molino to Skyline to Ohio. Back at my old stomping grounds today on the Long Beach Path. I was here almost daily in 2015. Long run today with the twins and it was great to be back. I spent most of my time in my anaerobic zone, which is exactly where I wanted to be. It was a long run today and about endurance so I didn't want to hit the wall. Hitting the Wall - for those of you who use Wahoo the wall is the power zone. For those of you who use MyZone the wall is the red zone. These zones are important if you are training power, speed, agility. Box jumps, sprints etc. , but if you hit this top zone during an endurance event you risk hitting the wall and as a coach I see it happen often. You see that camper go all out in their warm up and next thing you know they fall behind the entire class and barely finish. In other words, they hit the wall. Know your zones and train with them. Happy St. Patrick's Day! Endurance work today. In terms of heart rate today was about a baseline workout. Everyday, in regard to heart rate training, should have a target. Some days should be about power and speed where you hit your top zones. Some should be about endurance and baseline work where you stay in your anaerobic zone. Some should be about tempo where you stay below your baseline and work on your fat burning zone where fat does the work rather than sugar. As a coach I do not preach one zone, but rather preach that as an athlete we must hit them all. Baseline work, tempo work and power work are all important to the goal at hand. Today my workout was about endurance and therefore was a baseline workout where I kept my heart rate in my aerobic and anaerobic zone for as long as possible. Know your goal. Know how to train using your heart rate. It truly is the best training one can do. Getting our mile in today enjoying a nice leisurely walk. It's nice this time around having a change. Not forcing myself to run my mile a day it's nice finding joy in other forms of exercise that I otherwise wouldn't have done. I crave the tough. I want the gnarly. I live for the challenge. Without my daily mile goal of 2016 I would have never thought of going on a nice walk. May sound silly but it's true. In fitness it's not only important to mix things up, but I'm learning how important it is to also work the heart in its lower zones and not just its peak zones. A windy 4 miles of hills today to get my mile in. I did a zigzag workout today using block by block to map out my route and get my mileage in. Today I must give a gigantic congrats to Ms. Christine Lee Kim. When I started my one mile a day journey in 2015, shortly after day one this quiet whisper said "I will join you." Well come to find out she meant it. Those of you who have attempted, done or even thought about this journey know how tough it is. Not only was she my silent partner the entire time. Communicating via social media and some texts, but she did it too. She set out to do something and today she will complete the task at hand. She supported me by not only being my cheerleader, but by jumping on board. For me to set out to do it to lose weight, help me get out of the house as a new mom, try something new is one thing. To jump on board in support and stay and get it done is another thing. Again those of you who have followed this journey know all about this. Christine I hope you are proud. I hope you feel good. I hope you are smiling ear to ear because you should be. Running one mile a day for an entire year is something else. Thank you for being my partner along this road.
