Chocolate was first manufactured in the United States in 1765 by a Irish chocolate maker John Hannon. The chocolate beans were then imported from the Caribbean and refined in Dorchester, MA under the direction of Dr. James Baker (American physician and investor). Shortly, thereafter the first chocolate mill and factory in the US was opened in Dorchester. The Walter Baker chocolate factory part of the Walter Baker & Company brand was opened and stayed in operation until 1965.
