Description

Multi Chemical Sensitivity [MCS] can be a debilitating condition, especially if exposure to possible irritants haven't been addressed, or even recognised! For the moment, Multi Chemical Sensitivity has not been officially recognised in the UK - however, there are people, like me, who obviously have a problem with everyday man-made chemicals, for instance – perfume. There is a high chance that MCS could be linked with the body not being able to detoxify itself efficiently. For me, this certainly sounds relevant, as I never noticed extreme problems with perfume until my late 20's. Back then, because my skin started to rash up when I applied perfume, I would put it on my clothes instead… if only I could go back now and say to myself STOP! The rash was obviously a warning, but I did indeed choose to ignore it! The debate is currently going on, but until this horrible condition is recognised, no one is being helped, officially! So, it falls to individuals to look after themselves, and each other. Speaking from personal experience, MCS sufferers feel alone because they appear to be the only one affected out of their friends and families, whilst everyone else seems to be going about their lives 'normally'. Some people just don’t believe me! 10 years ago I created my shop, There Must Be a Better Way for organic and naturally sourced household and beauty products. I had a problem with my thyroid and my tolerance to food and everyday products declined. But I managed to heal my eczema skin condition and most intolerances faded once my thyroxine dosage was corrected, and so I thought that was it! But no, that wasn’t the end at all, in fact, that was just the beginning! I've been learning to live with this condition since 2005, when I actively began recognising I had problems with everyday household products, such as laundry washing powders, fabric conditioners [the worst offenders], household cleaning products and perfumes in everyday household and beauty products. If I look back even further, problems started well before then. Hayfever type symptoms would include blocked nose/sinus, headaches and dizziness relating to strong smells. Dust has always been a problem, I've learnt to only dust the house on lovely windy days, leaving the windows wide open. Or sometimes, if necessary, using a damp cloth. Unfortunately, my condition drove me out of the town I was living - every summer was torture. We had to keep the house closed off from our surrounding neighbours simply because the smell of their washing drying on their lines was literally making me very sick. On very bad days I’d be in bed for a couple of days crippled with flu like muscle aches and pains. So, since coming away from these strong smelling chemicals, and moving into the country - I've been able to focus on my health and wellbeing. I help myself by looking deeper into nutrition and natural & organic supplements. It was very obvious that my diet required more than just upping my vegetable and fruit content - I needed something extra! I have to say that most of the problem with regards to my condition is becoming worked up in the face of an unpleasant MCS trigger [stress]. I used to become very anxious and worried; the thought of becoming ill yet again seemed to increase the impact. Up to date symptoms for my MCS attack include: sore throat, sneezing, coughing, feeling detached, spacey and dizzy, blocked nose, painful sinus, instant throbbing flu muscle aches and pains all over, extreme fatigue, nose bleeds, headaches, and if unlucky, migraines. I used to have as many as 5 migraines in one month. This is no fun, especially as the lifespan for my migraines are about 3 days. A few years back I discovered that by increasing my magnesium levels [magnesium helps to relax muscles] prevented most headaches from progressing into crippling migraines. The action of taking responsibility for myself, I've now come to realise, helps and boosts me psychologically. Don’t get me wrong, I have very bad days, whereby I feel that no one understands me. But I have found ways to cope with that aspect too. Nutrition wise, I supplement with Vitamin D3 as it is a wonderful mood balancer – keeping myself mentally fit is crucial, since it helps with those “feeling sorry for myself feelings”! Meditating helps enormously. I took part in NLP - 2008 to 2009. NLP also helped me to control my anxiety when faced with MCS triggers. I’ve learnt to relax in the face of an MCS attack, and this in turn helps reduce the symptoms. There is no magic cure, no one answer to this complex issue. However, I have learnt to manage MCS. I am much happier, as a result of looking after myself. I am relatively ok with natural fragrances, but I don't risk losing that privilege, so generally I opt for unscented beauty and household cleaning products. Just to ensure I keep my system on an even keel and don't stimulate my system too much, I see using unscented products as giving my system a 'break' from processing too much information. I think, like most with MCS, I've learnt to become intuitive about my health, and in doing so I've become to know myself on a much deeper level. I learnt that supplementing my diet with ethical and wholesome supplements helps to support my energy levels and ability to cope physically and mentally with MCS, without these I don't think I would have been able to manage very well. Supplements and learning ways to alleviate stress can aid when a much greater call for help occurs. Unfortunately, late last year - 2013 - I experienced some very traumatic events, resulting in my MCS becoming much more active! Stress is the worst activator for MCS. Unfortunately, all I can do is my best. Learn to take it easy when I have no choice but to feel ill, I don't fight it, and above all, when I feel better - that I don’t forget to give my system a health boost. However, saying that, with all the knowledge I’ve amassed about how to cope and manage, I was able to pick myself right out of the hole I appeared to land in. There is nothing worse when there is no help, and it all depends on us to get ourselves better! But, that is just the way it is, for the moment. I have a feeling, it won’t be too long before the World wakes up soon, wakes up to what we’re doing to ourselves, to each other, to our Planet. I always live in faith. Take care, Lots of Love, Angie XXxx
