Description

MUN Botanical Garden is a registered charity and a not-for-profit corporation. The Garden has been developed to display plants native to the province and cultivated plants suitable to the local climate and to provide access to a number of habitats through a system of trails. Originally named Oxen Pond Botanic Park, it was initiated in 1971, under the supervision of Bernard S. Jackson. It was opened to the public in July, 1977. Botanical Garden Facilities The Field Centre: Adjacent to the car park, the field centre houses a conference room, children's classroom, reception desk, gift shop, library, café and washrooms. There is also a public display area, with a variety of gardening and nature exhibits on display throughout the season, including the Annual Art Exhibit. The Flower Gardens The flower gardens are located near the Field Centre and include: the cottage garden; rock gardens (including a limestone rockery and scree); alpine house; peat and woodland beds; Newfoundland heritage garden; rhododendron dell; Friend's wildlife garden; shade garden; medicinal garden; Friend's dried flower garden; vegetable garden; compost demonstration garden and much more. The Nature Trails: Five nature trails meander through a 110 acre managed nature reserve. The trails are wood chip covered and display a large variety of Newfoundland plants growing in native Newfoundland habitats including wetlands (bog and fen), freshwater (Oxen Pond), boreal forest, and Newfoundland barrens. Memorial University of Newfoundland Botanical Garden creates and inspires understanding, appreciation and conservation of plants in gardens and natural areas to further Memorial's mission of research, education and engagement.
