Description

We believe that Silicon Valley folks are generous. When aware of true need, they feel compelled and inspired to give the best of what they have. Mustard Seed will encompass a cafe style restaurant that encourages Silicon Valley professionals and residents to invite and dine with homeless individuals and families. The café will also include a store that sells donated goods (as well as silent auction items), and an advocacy center for connecting homeless individuals and families to medical/mental health care, rehabilitation services, emergency accommodations, affordable housing and job resources. If you are well connected in the philanthropy community in Silicon Valley and passionate about helping the homeless, we would love your assistance and partnership. We need inspired, passionate, compassionate and brilliant people to serve with us as board members, advisers and volunteers.

General Info

Business in Silicon Valley is better than it’s been in a decade, with companies like Facebook, Google and Apple minting hundreds of new tech millionaires. Silicon Valley stretches across much of Santa Clara and San Mateo counties, which together hold some of the wealthiest zip codes in the country. Median annual household incomes sit near $86,000, more than one and a half times the national level. It's a wealth creation area, and a wealthy collection of suburbs. Yet, in this area homelessness has increased 20% in the last 2yrs. People can't afford accommodation on minimum wage of $9.50p/hr. According to the Silicon Valley Index, homelessness rose 20 percent in the past two years and food stamp participation is at a 10-year high. The median price for a home is $550,000, while rent is, on average, a little under $2,000 a month for a two-bedroom apartment. And a family of four in Silicon Valley needs about $90,000 a year in order to cover rent, food, transportation, and childcare, according to the nonprofit Insight Center for Community Economic Development.
