Welcome everyone to the Nashville Contact Improvisation Facebook Page! Regular jams happen every 2nd Saturday & 3rd Friday each month.
Nashville Contact Improvisation welcomes all people interested in exploring movement through the lenses of community play, weight sharing, the dynamics of touch, and more. We hold a class + jam each 2nd Saturday and 3rd Friday of EVERY month. We are searching for a permanent space, but in the meantime, locations and times vary so please check here often for updates. Class + Jam Description Instructors lead the group through specific concepts for somatic exploration which cultivate shared skills and experiences. Some past themes have been the dynamics of touch, passive and active weight, acceptance of each moment, going towards, the Underscore, and more. Participants are then encouraged to explore class themes more freely during the jam for the latter half. About Contact Improvisation Contact Improvisation (CI) came into existence in the early 1960s and was developed, expanded, and promoted primarily by Steve Paxton and Nancy Stark Smith among countless others who have since joined the CI community. Its creators have at times resisted defining the form, stating the very nature of CI is in the “doing.” Most simply, it can be described as an extemporaneous form of movement most often done with a partner or small group of people. Within the partnership or small group, various aspects of falling, touch, weight-sharing, lifting, and decision-making in the moment are explored. Many do not consider CI to be a “performance form;” rather it is seen as a communal form of movement in which the experiences of the movers are central. This can often support individuals' journeys toward healing, trust-building, and interconnectedness of mind, body, and spirit. For more information check out this link: http://www.contactquarterly.com/contact-improvisation/about/cq_ciAbout.php What to Expect We will examine the concept of relationship within the context of movement, touch and weight exchange. PLEASE BE AWARE: Contact Improvisation is an intimate dance form in which we all may experience feelings of vulnerability and/or varying emotional states. We WILL touch each other often and eventually support each other’s weight. We may sometimes dance without music. With time we will develop awareness, compassion, respect, and skills in problem solving. What to Wear Please wear clothing in which you feel comfortable moving and that has minimal zippers, buttons, etc. that could hurt others when in contact. Long sleeves and pants allow for less friction against other bodies and the floor. Kneepads are also encouraged. (You can order some great ones here: http://www.contactquarterly.com/kp/cq_kp.php) Please do not wear jewelry that could create unfortunate snafus, and keep scented perfumes, oils, and lotions to a minimum in case someone in the community may be allergic.
