Neighborhoods in Detroit provides a general overview of neighborhoods and historic districts within the city.Downtown Detroit is the city's central business district and a residential area, bordered by M-10 (Lodge Freeway) to the west, the Interstate 75 (I-75, Fisher Freeway) to the north, I-375 (Chrysler Freeway) to the east, and the Detroit River to the south. The area contains many of the prominent skyscrapers in Detroit, including the Renaissance Center, the Penobscot Building, and the Guardian Building. The downtown area features high-rise residential living along with a number of parks including those linked by a promenade along the International Riverfront. Downtown Detroit was named among the best big city neighborhoods in which to retire by CNN Money Magazine editors.Woodward Avenue, the main thoroughfare, serves as a demarcation for neighborhoods areas on the east side and west side of the city which contain many neighborhoods. Woodward Avenue links the city's central corridor which contains Downtown, Midtown, New Center, the North End, and the University of Detroit Mercy area to the north. Campus Martius Park and Grand Circus Park Historic District are central gathering places along Woodward Avenue for Downtown containing parks, fountains, monuments, and large traffic circles surrounded by commercial and residential high-rises connected by Woodward Avenue. Foxtown is a name used in Detroit for the Grand Circus Park Historic District, The Fillmore Detroit, Comerica Park, and Ford Field located in it. It is named after the Fox Theatre, a National Historic Landmark. I-75 Grand River Avenue, M-1 (Woodward Avenue), I-375, U.S. Highway 12 (US 12, Michigan Avenue), and M-3 (Gratiot Avenue) all pass through or close to Foxtown. The Detroit People Mover has a station in Foxtown on the south end of Grand Circus Park.

Fort Pontchartrain du Détroit or Fort Detroit was a fort established by the French officer Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac in 1701. The location of the former fort is now in the city of Detroit in the U.S. state of Michigan, an area bounded by Larned Street, Griswold Street, and the Civic Center (now occupied by office towers).Background and constructionFort Detroit began on the Detroit River built to try to keep the British from moving west of New England and to monopolize the fur trade in North America. Before he built Fort Detroit, Cadillac was commandant of Fort de Buade, another French outpost in North America. Fort de Buade was abandoned in 1697 due to conflicts with religious leaders over the trading of alcohol to the Native Americans. Cadillac then persuaded his superiors to let him build a new settlement. He reached the Detroit River on July 23, 1701.When he landed on the site he held a celebration to formally take control of the area. In honor of Louis Phélypeaux, Comte de Pontchartrain (or his son, Jérôme), Minister of Marine to Louis XIV he named the new settlement Fort Ponchartrain du Detroit. The storehouse and the stockade were started immediately, but the first building completed was Ste. Anne's Church. The stockade came next and was made of logs rising about 12 feet into the sky with towers in each corner.
