Description

The New Berlin Charter School is a partnership of students, parents, faculty and community members working together to provide K-5 students with an active, joyful and student-centered educational experience that inspires children to become self-motivated, conscientious learners. A comprehensive environmental education program serves as a core feature of our integrated, theme-based curriculum that supports academic excellence in all content areas while taking into consideration the needs of the whole child, including social, emotional, physical and academic growth. Classroom learning will be inspired and elevated by outdoor educational experiences and investigation of local resources to make learning as relevant as possible, allowing students to apply their growing knowledge to their understanding of the larger world. As a community center, we will serve to explore, appreciate and preserve our community’s cultural heritage and natural resources by creating and inspiring good citizens and environmental stewards who give back freely to their community through involvement and service. The New Berlin Charter School’s vision is to… ■Enable all students to achieve learning standards through small class sizes, a low teacher/student ratio and an integrated, academically challenging and theme-based curriculum that supports interdisciplinary learning across all content areas. ■Connect children to the natural world through unstructured outdoor play and a comprehensive environmental education program that utilizes the teaching methods of outdoor, experiential and place-based education to expand opportunities for active, inquiry-driven learning to boost student achievement and create capacity for environmental stewardship and good citizenship. ■Pursue sustainability by working to enact the standards of the US Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools program, implementing an environmental ethic embodied in our educational focus and in the physical structure of the school. ■Evaluate, identify and apply the most current brain-based research principles (may include, but is not limited to the Mind, Brain, Education science (MBEs) standards) to determine the best practices in pedagogy, classroom planning, instruction and teaching methodology. ■Provide a healthy and sustainable school environment that focuses on the needs of the whole child, including Recess First, 35-40 minutes of daily outdoor recess to expend energy and promote rejuvenation of mind and spirit prior to refueling bodies with a healthy food for the remainder of the academic day. ■Incorporate a social curriculum, Responsive Classroom, to optimize student achievement by creating a safe, challenging, flexible and joyful learning environment that promotes the essential social skills of cooperation, assertion, responsibility, empathy, self-control, respect and appreciation of individual differences. ■Foster positive communication and partnership with parents, community members and local organizations to enhance the educational process and connect children to the people, places and resources in their local environment. ■Provide opportunities for creative and critical thinking, collaborative problem-solving, academic choice and individualized instruction. ■Encourage opportunities for kinesthetic, social, artistic and musical expression to foster creativity, joy and a love of learning. ■Optimize the appropriate use of technology in advancing educational goals. ■Develop multi-cultural appreciation and understanding through music, art and language.
