Description

The Center was created in 1990 as the nation’s first and largest Veteran-specific homeless shelter. It began as a 100-bed, emergency facility in a surplus VA office building, and by 1991 was recognized as the 142nd “Point of Light” by President George H.W. Bush during his administration. Since that time, the NECHV has continued to improve its specialized model for Veterans. The Center has developed a comprehensive residential treatment program (serving over 300 veterans at any given time) comprised of the emergency housing and transitional housing program, including specialized housing for female homeless Veterans in the NECHV Women’s Dormitory Program. NECHV also provides extensive services in substance abuse counseling, post detox, mental health, case management, accessing the Veterans Administration system, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI), pre-employment training, post-incarceration re-integration, job placement, housing placement, dental and medical treatment, and daily hot meals.

General Info

For all inquiries regarding donations of clothing, food, toiletries, etc., please call us at 617-371-1882. For all inquiries regarding volunteer opportunities at NECHV, please email us at community.support@nechv.org. NECHV offers a wide range of services through five distinct programs and support services: Training and Employment, as well as Health Care and Case Management, Emergency Housing, Transitional Housing, and Single Room Occupancy Apartments. Each of these services assists Veterans in solving the problems that led them to homelessness. Many of the staff and board are fellow Veterans who understand the needs of their comrades, and wish to help them regain lives of independence. Since opening our doors, we have provided aid to more than 20,000 veterans, caring for them as they cared for us through their service.
