Description
The LAC covers 173 square kilometres with an estimated population of 141,752 (2006 census) and they occupy about 58,755 private dwellings. Estimate population growth of 3.2% (4,445 persons) from 2001-2006 maintains an upward trend that has emerged over the past decade. The command includes a significant industrial area situated in Kooragang Island (near Stockton) which includes coal loading facilities and plans for the development of a third facility (this has created tension with green groups who have expressed their intentions of future civil disobedience action). The Command also houses the John Hunter Hospital and Newcastle Mater Misericordiae (Mater) Hospital (which incorporates a psychiatric facility for the Hunter District) The Command also contains Energy Australia Stadium (home-ground of the Knights NRL team) and Jets (Soccer team) as well as the Entertainment Centre (major centre for national and international acts). Police and the community working together to reduce violence, crime and fear.

Le choix même du nom de la ville en 1804 a un rapport direct avec l'activité portuaire, car c'est une référence directe au port de Newcastle upon Tyne, port anglais célèbre au pour l'exportation du charbon vers Londres (par cabotage).En 1915, la société BHP inaugure les ' (aciéries de Newcastle), installées en amont du port sur le site de Brownfield. La Seconde Guerre mondiale entraine le développement de l'industrie lourde avec notamment l'ouverture en 1942 du ' à Dykes Point, lançant des navires pour la ' et l. En 1951, l'autorité portuaire lance le chantier de réunion de trois îles sur la rive gauche au nord de la ville pour former le vaste terre-plein de l'.
