Description

I chose Dental Technology as a profession as l wanted to work in a creative and artistic environment and the manufacture of dental prosthesis does enable me to use these talents. I further advanced my skills to become a Clinical Dental Technician as l felt that l could make a real difference to patient care and satisfaction. In being able to work directly with the patient l can see their full facial features before any prosthesis is constructed. I can talk to them and discuss their needs and requirements for their new dentures and keep them informed at all times. With this process, l believe that l am able to satisfy my patients by providing them with functional, natural and aesthetically pleasing dentures. I run my own very successful denture clinic but l also work within a multi-disciplinary private practice and therefore able to work very closely with other members of the dental team, enabling me to facilitate in all aspects of clinical dental technology including full full dentures partial dentures and implant dentures. During my time within the practice l am able to call on the dentists with any issues that l or the patient may have. I believe that we are all part of a team and that the best interest of the patients should come first and foremost. Personal development is very high on my agenda and l firmly believe in continual learning. I have attended an Ivoclar BPS course in Lichtenstein, LonDEC, Kings College London covering implantology, the Art & Science of Patient Care and Rehabilitation of the Atrophic Maxilla and several educational evenings at the Northern Deanery. I think it is important to have knowledge on all aspects of clinical dental technology. By attending seminars, courses and trade exhibitions l am able to broaden my knowledge which keeps me up to date with new technology, products and new skills. Networking with colleagues and fellow professionals also enhances my personal development. I am currently a member of the BACDT and the North East Private Dentists Association and l have given lectures in prosthedontics to Vocational Trainees at the Northern Deanery in Durham. The feedback that l have received from these events has been very positive. I regularly invite and encourage VT’s to shadow me in order that they can gain experience and share my knowledge which can only be conducive to good team building for the future WHAT IS A CLINICAL DENTAL TECHNICIAN???? Alan Forrest is a registered Clinical Dental Technician (CDT). A CDT is a Dental Technician who has extended their training to achieve a further qualification. This allows the CDT to be part of the dental team as a health care provider, working directly with the patient to provide dentures. If a patient requires a partial denture then they must first be seen by a dentist to ensure that all their natural teeth are healthy and any work that is needed prior to the denture being constructed is attended to by one of the other health care professionals. As one of the first to qualify as a CDT’s in this country and to be registered with the General Dental Council (GDC) and jointly recognised by the Royal College of Surgeons, Alan has over thirty years experience as a Dental Technician. He is able to assess a patient’s facial features, how they smile, how they talk and their naturally relaxed position before providing then with their dentures. In contrast when a prescription is sent to the laboratory, the technician working on your dentures is unlikely to have all this information.
