BACKGROUND Newport City Radio first began life as Urban Circle Radio, based in Pillgwenlly two years ago streaming online to hundreds of listeners. Nowadays, with the existence of other Urban Circle Projects such as BattleTurf, BBoy Wales and FMA Cymru, we have grown substantially in terms of size and stature. Newport City Radio supports and empowers people of all ages, all abilities with training and development in radio broadcasting. Newport City Radio are dependent entirely on many volunteers from a variety of backgrounds and ethnicities, serving Newport online with a broad mix of programming, who have their various radio shows and and have to operate the equipment daily. Currently managed by Ian Lamsdale and Ali 'Shai' Boksh as volunteers. We have the finest team of presenters Newport has to offer with years of experience and immense enthusiasm. Our presenters are local people; real people with real lives in Newport. The radio station is functioned by a mixture of experienced local DJ's and local young people, co - ordinated by a group of volunteers with backgrounds in Infomation Technology, music, marketing etc under the overall management of the volunteer managers. They relate to the audience by being knowledgeable, entertaining and informed while remaining totally focused on exceeding listeners expectations. WHY? What is Newport Missing Compared to other cities in UK? ANSWER: Its Very Own Radio Station in Newport - Just for the Community of Newport, which incidentally is the only radio service currently catering solely to the City of Newport. Listeners will hear about areas of Newport not talked about on any other radio station. This community radio station has allowed the people of the area to have their own voice and has provided an outlet for not just the talents across age and cultural concerns but has facilitated a platform for communication and dialogue across the 100,000 plus population. Newport has been without its own radio station since UTV Radio's 28 day trial Newport FM back in April 2005 and there had not been a test transmission since 2003. Newport City Radio now represents a fantastic opportunity for the city to be on par with major city's across the UK in having its own very own radio station. We launched and broadcast on FM as Newport City Radio on Wednesday 16th July 2008 for a 12 day trial. The station has been currently broadcasting and operating only from it's official website for three years. However, with the right equipment, it would enable more youths to get involved with programme production and ultimately reach a much wider public audience. We have been broadcasting twice a year on a temporary licence on 87.9 FM. We have also successfully operated 4 temporary licences, as facilitated by OFCOM. Even with 5 trial FM broadcasts, our station continues to look to the future by continuousy enhancing our online stream and website for the benefit of the community.
