Mission Statement: The Nicolas G. Hayek Watchmaking School is dedicated to developing professional watchmakers and future after sales service leaders for the Swiss watch industry by providing a WOSTEP education that will lead to a rewarding career. Our faculty is committed to instilling the time honored spirit of watch making, where tradition is balanced in harmony with cutting edge technology, truly preparing graduates for the demands of modern After Sales Services. The School WOSTEP was founded in 1966 by Ebauches SA and the Federation of Swiss Watch Manufacturers (FH) and is an institute for further education in watch making. The Swiss watch industry set up this school under the name of Watchmakers of Switzerland Training and Educational Program (WOSTEP) in order to train foreign watchmakers in after-sales service methods for Swiss watches. WOSTEP launched an ambitious program to foster and encourage the training of watch repairers and retailers worldwide. The WOSTEP program is widely recognized as the industry’s best training and certification program. As one of only two WOSTEP Partnership training facilities in America, the Nicolas G. Hayek’s Watchmaking School’s mission is to develop and nurture the future generation of watchmakers. In doing so, the School not only provides the industry with a resource for the servicing of fine quality Swiss watches, but also a lucrative career for its graduates. Tuition and Fees The Nicolas G. Hayek Watchmaking School is a tuition free program. Students will be required to pay for their tools; estimated cost is approximately $3,500.00. Housing and meals are the responsibility of the students; the school does not provide dormitory facilities. Only citizens and legal residents of the United States are eligible to enroll and participate in this program. The Course The Nicolas G. Hayek Watchmaking School provides the WOSTEP two-year program designed to train and certify students to work in the field of after sales service. The program entails 3,000 hours of theoretical and hands-on instruction, including the manufacturing of tools and watch parts as well as service and maintenance procedures for all types of watches. Upon completion of the curriculum, students must prove their skills in a final exam to qualify for WOSTEP certification. The exam includes theoretical and practical tests that cover all aspects of horology. The WOSTEP certificate is internationally recognized and provides a base for excellent employment opportunities in the U.S. and abroad. Examinations / School Program First Stage: Micromechanics – (approximately 6 months) In the first phase, students learn to use basic watch making tools for shaping metals. Emphasis is placed on topics related to micro technology, including the metric system of measurement, tracing, sawing, precision filing, tool making and tool sharpening. Students will undertake projects combining the watchmakers lathe, heat treatment and polishing processes. Demonstrations are given, and students will have an opportunity to work on individual projects making watch parts and hand tools with the assistance of guided instruction. Students also gain an insight into the concept of time, and the evolution of its measuring devices from a historical perspective. Second & Third Stages: Mechanical Watch I & II (approximately 11 months) These phases focus on watch terminology and service techniques. Students become familiar with the many different complications available in watches: various self-winding and calendar systems, moon phase, calibrations, mechanical and quartz watches. They acquire basic mechanical knowledge and learn disassembly and assembly sequences while improving their dexterity. Fourth Stage: Advance Mechanical and Electronic Watches - (approximately 5 months) In the last phase, students acquire in depth knowledge of various types of complications, chronographs and electronic watches and learn maintenance and casing procedures, including the proper fitting of all components. Organization of after-sales service is covered to prepare the student for various opportunities available to the professional watchmaker. At the end of Phase 4, students prepare for and take the WOSTEP certification exam. *Minor changes to the program may occur. Schedule: The program is divided into four sessions, which run as: • Semester 1: January – June (Mid-Year Break – 1 week) • Semester 2: July – November • Mid-Program Break: Thanksgiving – New Years - No classes • Semester 3: January – June (Mid-Year Break – 1 week) • Semester 4: July through December (WOSTEP Final Examination) Class is in session five days per week, seven and a half hour days with a 30 minute lunch. The school closes for most major holidays and from Thanksgiving through to New Year’s Day.
