Neurologic Music Therapy Services of Arizona (NMTSA) is a 501(c)3 organization dedicated to serving individuals with a variety of neurologic disorders through the application of neurologic music therapy to achieve non-musical goals such as speech, physical movement, cognition and other conditions of the nervous system. Additionally, NMTSA opened an Arizona Department of Education approved elementary education program (ACT School) in 2007 that serves students with Autism.
NMTSA serves more than 300 clients ranging in age from six months to 92 years all of whom have been diagnosed with a variety of neurologic disorders including, but not limited to, Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome, Sensory Integration Disorder, Traumatic Brain Injury, Parkinson’s Disease, developmental delays and many others.
Neurologic music therapy is “the therapeutic application of music to cognitive, sensory and motor function due to neurologic disease of the human nervous system” and our mission is to provide preventative and rehabilitative neurologic music therapy services as well as community education about positive approaches to working with persons with neurologic impairments, Autism and developmental disabilities.
ACT School (Assuming Competence Today) is a literacy-based educational program that assumes the competence of the students served and provides the accommodations necessary to maximize the students’ academic achievement. The goal of the ACT program is to serve children with Autism who have not succeeded in their regular district programs due to behavioral, sensory, and/or communication needs; to meet those needs within a challenging literacy-based program, and to then integrate those children back into inclusive settings within their own districts.
NMTSA and ACT wholly believe in facilitating relationships and promoting independence for each and every client we serve and providing these programs to all who need them not just those who can afford them.
